Class 1, 2, and 3 hitch

Another question that relates to whether I buy a 16' or 17' Casita is the various classes of hitches:

1. Is a sway bar is required for both the 16' or 17' Casitas? What are the tradeoffs?

2. Does Class 1 hitch for 16' mean just any hitch will do?

3. The 17' require Class 2 or 3 hitch, what does this mean in type and costs of hitch?

hitches

That's not how I remember the hitch requirements. :nope
Class I is 2000/200 tongue weight
Class II is 3500/350 tongue weight
Class III is 5000/500 tongue weight.
I think

16 requires a II doesn't it?
17 prefers a III just a little heavy on the tongue weight to be loaded and still stay under 350.

Your not suppose to load to the max, but stay under by at least 10%(?)

as far as using a III hitch for something that could be pulled with a I; I don't think there would be a problem.

Hi Tom!

Hi Tom! Hey, I agree with Jan ... you need a minimum of a Class 2 hitch, even for a 16 foot trailer.

But, if you are going to err, err on the side of overkill .... if there is a class 3 hitch for your tow vehicle, I'd install it if I were you.

Reese offers a selection guide at:

http://www.reeseprod.com/

There are many more drawbar combinations available for a class 3 (drawbars give you towing height lift or drop). Also more bicycle carriers and platform carriers.

U-haul is a good source and installer of hitches in the states.

In Canada, they've got this wonderful, wonderful place for all things towing called Canadian Tire that's worth the price of the trip up there!

Lots is written

Lots is written about the merits of sway bars on various RV websites.

A sway bar's cheap insurance. Have it installed. You don't always have to use it ... but it's available if you want to use it.
