Cleaning cushions

Question for all of you that have bought your trailers second hand. How did you clean the cushion covers? We have a 91 13' lil' bigfoot that is new to us that we would like to clean up before hitting the camping trail this spring. We were thinking of steaming the foam, but we are unsure how to properly wash the cushions (will they shrink??). Any insights? TIA

I've machine washed cushion covers for two trailers (and some indoor furniture); hand washed in the bathtub then dried flat some other cushion covers that I was more concerned about (some I line dried).

Check to see if the inside seams are finished if you think the fabric might unravel with washing.

You could always just steam clean the covers if you are really worried.

If you wash, test the method on a single cover (the one you value the least) to see how it goes.

As always YMMV.

Good luck!

I LOVE Woolite with Oxy to clean with. Comes in a spray bottle and will remove most any stain.

We put new foam in our 2006 Scamp cushions. I took the covers off and took them to a dry cleaners. We were a bit concerned about throwing them in the washer. Dry cleaners solved the problem.

So, are you saying that steam cleaning didn't work, so you had to buy new ones?

I kinda thought that might the right way to clean them.. I would think the manufacturer of the cushions or the fabric would know for sure. I wonder what the cost was for the dry cleaning.

This is what we were thinking initially, just trying to see if we can get by with a quick wash until we find upholstery material we like to get covers made. May end up just getting them dry cleaned if it doesn't cost us too much...

I got slip covers made for my cushions. Fit and look great for not a lot of money. Easy to change the look as they have a full length zipper and just stuff the whole cushion cover and all in. Now all that is needed to clean them is to take them off and cold wash in the sink and air dry - then re-treat with Scotchguard.

We spent a ton of money getting our living room furniture reupholstered at a high-end shop. Owner had decades of experience.
He advised not to use Scotchguard - that it makes cleaning the fabric more difficult.

We decided to hand wash (step on in tub) the covers. It took 3 washes and 3 rinses but they feel much cleaner!

We also found out that by steaming the foam cushions with a clothes steamer you can "repair" the condensed foam. Pretty excited about this one as we can salvage the original foam that was in decent shape for a few more years!

The foam on the left has been steamed and the foam on the right has not.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!Click image for larger version

I think it was somewhere between $10 and $20 for all but the top bunk and the banana cushion. (4 in the dinette and one for bench).
