Duotherm furnace

At the end of last camping season we had our Ventura's wiring and propane supply checked by a qualified person.

We were delighted to have the furnace up and running when we went for our first trip this year - to Prince Albert National Park. We seem to not be understanding how the furnace works though. We tried 'just the pilot light' the first night and we were COLD. The next night we used setting 3 on the dial and slept like babies - not too hot, not too cold. The following night we set it the same and roasted.

Can anyone explain the settings for these furnaces?

There's a temperature sensor at the bottom of the furnace grate. It looks like a closed brass tube on the end of a fat copper wire.

Free air has to be able to circulate around it to give the thermostat an accurate signal.

Is it possible that a shoe or some clothes were covering it up the second night?

The setting 1-1/2 (out of six) is comfortable for us when the temp goes down to freezing. The furnace is designed to heat much larger trailers, I think.

The Pilot light is used to light the burner, it isn't to provide any heat, though it puts plenty out.

I am falling in love with this site and all the friendly, helpful folks who hang out here.

Next time we head out we'll have a few clues to the use of the furnace.
