D'ya wash tow vehicle while traveling?

Ok, as some of you know, I like to keep a clean trailer ... washed, waxed and shiney, looking all factory-fresh ... whether we're on the road or at home.

But a bone of contention in our traveling is Pam likes the tow vehicle to be all shiny too.

I, on the other hand, feel a dirty tow vehicle shows you're not afraid to pull the trailer into some dirty, muddy areas.

But alas, like a good, obedient husband, when we pull into a strange area, after we disconnect the trailer, and head into town, I help Pam find a spray-car-wash place so she can wash the tow vehicle. Yes, I said when "she" washes the truck ... because I usually sit inside and look at angry and upset that she's wasting good vacation time washing a truck, for crying out loud!

Why she persists in this is beyond me. But I do as I'm told ....

Well, usually ....

This morning, when she left for work, Pam told me to take the Suburban to a car wash after it stops raining. "You might even wax the truck before winter sets in."

I said ... ya, right, when pigs can fly!

Don't know if it's a sign, or not, but after she left, I looked out my window and saw ...

But here's the deal ... do you worry about washing the tow vehicle when you're on the road?

Rally cleanliness

I suppose it all started on the national Casita rally, but I've become addicted to those big truck wash places. Yes, Charles, maybe it's a chick thing! Ollie sits in the van with Queenie, or gets out and walks around with her. But I get to cool off while I revel in the spray. Actually, they started to appreciate that helping made them cool, too. We just start with the vehicle that leads into the stall--van or Pearl--wash it and rinse it, then move the other one in and do it. Then we feel just a little better when we drive in and see all those shiny clean Casitas lined up.

Wash?

<img src=http://216.40.241.68/ups/sicdeth/headscratch.gif/> So, am I disqualified from answering this question, since we don't really believe in washing the tow vehicle, whether we're travelling or not?

I mean, talk about a thankless job!

Almost as bad as bathing the dogs....:r

Nancy

Nancy, I'm a little nervous when I hear about people taking their trailer to a commercial car wash, with the high power water spray wands.

I've posted it before ... but I'll post it again ...

You should never use the "high power" wands to wash a trailer ... for two reasons ...

1. the high powered spray can "lift" caulk and window gaskets, causing the windows or cargo doors to leak.

2. The high power spray can penetrate too deeply into the refrigerator and water heater compartments ... even filling the gas orifices ... causing them to rust .. Normal rain water or wet road spray doesn't ... but aiming a wand right at the vents on the refrig or water heater can shoot water right into the wrong places.

I know you know this ... but am posting this for others to read.

It's ok to use the "spot free rinse" and the soapy brush ... but never use the high power spray. And when you're using the "spot free rinse" setting, I'd avoid aiming at the refrig or water heater compartments.

And Mary, you really should wash your trailer. I agree about not washing the tow vehicle ... but hey, a dirty trailer is the sign of a dirty ...

Ahhh...

I never said anything about not washing my trailer!

My trailer is recently washed and waxed... Oh yeah. I believe in taking good care of the gel coat!

Tow vehicle

A good place to get your tow vehicle all shinny is Mexico!

Now that it is getting later in the year I am thinking of a trip to the South and when I go there, I always make a stop in Juarez.

Park at the city market and you will pay a guy a few pesos to watch your car and feed the meter. Another guy will ask if you want your vehicle washed and waxed while you shop. For the Jeep they usually charge about $11 US and do a fine job.

You want most of the dirt off when you get there because they just wipe it to wash it. They use a cleaner wax, which is OK once in a while. They even dress the tires.

I wouldn't take the Casita there. Too busy, and then you have to get back across the border.

Washing

I have to admit that it's not a big priority to me when I'm on the road. It's barely a priority when I'm at home for that matter. Mostly a matter of having better things to think about and more important things to do at the moment. I don't think of the trailer as a showpiece, so it's physical appearance (beyond pleasing myself) isn't that important to me.

Washing the tow vehicle

Sue thinks I am bit obsessive about this. When I travel and get to a destination I make sure my Durango is clean before I call it a night. It doesn't help matter that it is black! So..Sue is right, I am obsessive when it comes to cleanliness!:wak
