Joseph,
As a fellow Ranger owner, I'd suggest you double check your manual for tow limits based on your actual vehicle specs. The Ranger has a wide range of capacities.
If the weights are OK, 2 things come to mind, Ford states a maximum frontal area for trailers in the manual, my guess is that your BF is coming close to the limit. Secondly, the brakes in the Ranger are light at best, e-brakes on the trailer and a good brake controller really make a difference. Even on my little boler American.

OH yeah, you will learn to take it out of OD in town and on the hills.

Thanx for the heads-up on towing a Bigfoot with my Ranger....too late...just closed the deal on a nice '89 17 footer yesterday, and towed it home...all of 5 miles from where I live !!!About 4 miles of that was highway at about 80 kph;no problems apparent, and towed it without the equilizer hitch that came with the trailer. The Ebrakes were functional, and the BF brakes did not grab, or squeal. The trailer had sat since last summer.
I will re-check my '04 Ranger manual. regarding the frontal area issue, must have totally missed that;how is F/A measured ?
BTW, my Ranger is 4WD,4.0 L V6,Ext Cab, with factory tow-package, incl. trans cooler, Class lll hitch, and Ebrake controller.
Yes, I have always disabled O/D when towing; (even the Trillium, for instance)...but in town?Never do.What's the scoop on taking it out of O/D in city driving? I would think speeds reached would not call for O/D to be engaged by the transmission.
