Great way to fill a fiberglass hole

So we have been doing a lot of fiberglass work on our Boler, and we needed to patch a very larger area where a previous owner had put a hole in the back and installed an AC unit. I hit upon an excellent idea to make a patch for the hole. I put a call out to craigslist, looking for a fiberglass tub surround that someone might have pulled out during a bathroom demo. Someone called and said they had one in the dumpster that we were welcome to come and get. It was perfect! My husband measured the hole, cut a piece from the surround, and fiberglassed it in place from the inside (we have no interior covering at the moment). Filled the cracks on the outside with a fiberglass putty stuff I think (might have just been bondo). It looks fantastic and was so easy! Much easier than trying to make a patch that big from scratch. This works great if you have a large hole to fill in a fairly flat area of the shell. I can take some pictures tonight if anyone cares to see them.

This is a great way to get those panels replaced in the front stone guard for those trilliums! I wish I thought of that before spending $70 on a sheet of fiberglass wall panneling.

I have a couple of large holes in my roof that are poorly patched and leaking. I've been wracking my brain trying to think of where I might get patch panels. GREAT idea.

if patching holes it would be beneficial if you also cut extra peices to use as backing over the cut lines to increase the strength of the joint especially for the roof.

I purchased my sheet from Home Depot. it is a FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) that is used for shower walls and washroom walls. one side is pebbled and the other side is fairly smooth and can come in diffrent colors.

It was about 3/16 thick and can be cut with a table/circular saw. It is pretty flexible and can bend to fit some curved surfaces (not compound surfaces)

Thanks for the great info we have a small opening filled with poly fill but this would be better. It could bend to fit in by the door.

Not sure about the FRP from Menards but most FRP I've seen isn't UV protected so once it's installed, find a good UV blocking wax or other protective coating & use it. Otherwise the FRP may over time oxidize, craze, or some other non welcome happenstance...
