How do you clean and restore moldy gunk interior of RV trailer
Recently became the owner of this scamp trailer. It is in very poor condition and needs a lot of cleaning/ restoration. Does anyone know what the black stuff on the interior ceilings and walls are? It is textured so I don't think it is mold (although I'm sure there is mold as well). Does anyone have an idea on what we can do to get this in better condition? The outside also has graffiti if anyone knows how to clean that. More pictures available in the link below

Carol,
From your photos, the black material on the walls appears to be remains of ensolite wall covering from when the ensolite was removed. Ensolite consists of a black closed cell foam covered with a textured white vinyl layer.
For mold, we used diluted bleach, scrubbing bubbles, and other strong cleaners. After cleaning and drying, we applied Concrobium which kills mold and is intended to be left on the surface to prevent future mold growth.

As far as the exterior, look for the threads about Polly Glow and especially the long, multi-year one about not Poly Glow. There is a lot of info there about how to clean up fiberglass and make it shine again.

4-4.5" grinder with twisted wire brush will get the foam and old glue off the inside walls. Just be careful not to cut through the shell. Use goggles, respirator, gloves and coveralls it a messy job. Mechanical removal is better than chemicals for the foam and glue.
Outside Start with JoMax house cleaner, then bartenders friend, Then light sanding and buffing.

If you have mold growth you will be able to smell it.

Looks like a great project!
Check in cupboards and under seats to see if the original wall material is still there.
Will give you an idea what it looked like to begin with.
Whatever you end up using to remove the rest of the interior finish, careful, the fiberglass is thin.
Just get started and don't stop, gonna be a great project.

Graffiti Remover works well on spraypaint. I suggest cleaning it first tho, the paint may be on top of the dirt & may come off with it. as always, test the remover in a small spot to see if it causes more damage than it helps. rinse well as soon as the paint is off, working in small patches.
I can't tell from the pics - did they remove the metal bracket that connects the sink to the upper cabinet? not pretty but very important!
you have a lot of work ahead of you to get it nice, but a great opportunity to make it your own! good luck!

"Concrobium Mold Control is an innovative, market-leading product that effectively eliminates existing mold, prevents mold re-growth and eliminates musty odors with no harmful chemicals. The unique technology is used by homeowners, professional remodelers, contractors and remediators."
What is Concrobium? "Sodium Carbonate is the listed “active ingredient” on the Concrobium Mold Control label, but in fact there are two other ingredients in the solution which, when combined with the sodium carbonate and the water, result in this patented tri-salt polymer that eliminates and prevents mold."
You can buy Concrobium at Lowe's and Home Depot. Read the directions. Concrobium should be applied after surfaces have been completely cleaned.

interesting, the MSDS lists TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate) as the active ingredient.

Most soaps/detergents will remove mould growth. Some stains may be difficult to remove but can be painted over. The musty odor is a byproduct of mould growth. The only way to prevent the growth of new mould is to eliminate its moisture source. Chemicals are only a temporary solution.

Yep! Kill it but not eliminate the water source and it will be back.

There is also a chlorine bleach made exclusively for killing mold. I don't remember where I bought mine but it was in a local store, no special ordering needed. It may have been Lowe's.

let me throw in another procedure.... after fixing the water leaks, and nuking the obvious mold with chlorine, and airing the trailer out til you can't smell the bleach, rent an 'ozone generator' from your local Tool Rent-all place, and follow the instructions. basically close up all the windows, leave all the cabinets open, put the ozone generator inside with the power cord snaked out the door and plug it in for a half dozen hours, unplug it and wait another 24 hours, then open things up WITHOUT BREATHING THE AIR INSIDE and let it air out thoroughly.
will make everything minty fresh again. this will kill old barf smells, old mold smells, cigar smoke, you name it. works great on older cars, too.
