Those lights look awsome! Since my U-Haul has a wrap-around taillight style, I prefer to replace the bulb rather than the whole light assembly. I've heard that some LED replacements are not as bright as the original incandescent bulb. Has anyone replaced their taillight bullbs with LEDs and do you have a recommended manufacturere or style?

Yes, I replaced the original incandescent rear tail/brake lights on my 74 Boler (I think they are 1157s, from memory) with direct replacement LED bulbs from Princess Auto at 8 bucks each last summer. They work great. They are much more directional than the incandescents, but are very bright when viewed from the rear, which is where I want the light to go.

I,ve just installed the waterproof units mentioned at the beginning of this post (from Princess auto) directly into the original housings on my Trillium. The originals needed considerable repair, cracked baseplates, totally rusted out metal bits, although the lenses were ok), so with some repair and adaptation, ( epoxyed base plates, drilled mounting bolt holes) they fit nicely with the supplied lenses removed, and keep that nice stock look!

Could you post a picture of your conversion. It sounds like a good idea - my rear lights are in good shape but are pretty dim.
How do you like the results vs the old bulbs ?

Heres a pic of what I did, I also used plumbers goop to put the amber lites in as extra running lites, as there was room, tho it was bright enough without, I centered the main lite so it was centered in the bulls eye of the original lens. Definitely a big improvment in visibility. One could also just use the actual clear plastic innards on their own as they are sealed units, but I used the whole housing as I could then bolt the whole thing down.

Hi Donna,

I can't get the links above to work and I am interested in the part numbers at P.Auto. Do you know what these light numbers are?

Part numbers for Princess Auto are:

The 7" round for the boler are SKU: 8059586
I've bought others that look the same there and discovered they only had 2 wires and would not work as tail lights.

The rectangular ones shown above are SKU: 8059545

Be forwarned that Princess Auto has a set that looks the same but do not have the licence plate light.

There are more pictures using the rectangular lights slightly differently in this thread:
