Propane Regulator Installation - Scamp Style

My original propane regulator, installed by Scamp, has failed after only 25 months, evidenced by propane escaping from the large (secondary stage) vent. It was mounted by Scamp uncovered and with the second stage vent in the vertical position but everything I read says that the vent should be pointed down, within 45 degrees, and/or covered. I have little doubt that their choice of mount contributed to the short lifespan of the unit.
  • Should I get a similar model and install it as shown in the second photo (with better hose routing than is shown)?
  • Or should I buy a model with a 2ed stage vent at the nine o'clock position (like in the third photo) and mount it on the side of the frame?
  • What about brand? Marshall Excelsior perhaps? Or does it make little difference?
  • Should I buy a cover for the second stage. first stage or both?

Side note to the curmudgeon who feels it is necessary to warn me not to mess with propane and instead take it to a professional: Your admonishment is noted even before it is stated so no further acknowledgment of it will be made.

Edit: The covers for the Marshal reg are less than $7 for both so thats an easy decision.

Gordon,
I just had my propane worked on by an RV shop that I think knows their products and were able to leak test the system.

What I originally had was all brass tubing. There was a kink in the brass tubing so I requested the new flexible type hose now used by Scamp.

Hope this info and photos are helpful.

Here is how they mounted it:

Here is how they made the adaptation of rubber hose to brass tube:

lisa nice job I would have done it differently same result doesn't really matter in the long scheme of things. We both arrived at the same result!

First, why not ask why it was done this way, of Scamp ? Is there considered a shelf life on regulators ? How does one check to see if the pressure is low enough ?

Later Kenny

  • Because the Scamp is out of warranty and I dont want to waste my time trying to convince them that it should be done differently.
  • 10 years is about average.
  • Go to a professional who will use a manometer.

wonder

Kenny maybe these developed leaks I don't really know they just redid their plumbing to the tank.

I guess they could post their reasons but I would bet on leaks

Next time at a camp ground just look at the other campers or at a dealer.

OK so the old regulator is off, and no surprise.. it was full of rusty water. It is no wonder that it failed after only 25 months. Shame on Evelands for installing it this way.

My new one is not yet installed but the below photos show it, and the covers. The covers are an option that IMHO should not be optional when the reg is mounted without some other sort of cover, like it is on the Scamp. And the 2ed stage vent will be facing down to drain any water or condensation that does get in it.

well

I just took my origianls off lets see 22 years and they are still good but I wanted to reduce my weight on the tongue.

I had no rust on those regulators matter of fact I have them listed for free including the platform if anyone wants them

15.00 for the usps maybe less I don't know for sure.

about one more week they go into the trash

bob

I wish someone would splain to me why one rusts the other doesn't?

And it would seem that the boys at Evelands don't even read the warning on the items they install...
