refinishing a '69 scamp

I have a '69 Scamp that has lost it gelcoat shine. The gel coat is also thin in areas. What would be the proper way to restore the outside paint of can you re-gelcoat the outside?

Ď69! Iím afraid that Iíve lost a little luster over the past 50 years too.

Painting with Brightside or a similar product could work. I donít know anything about re-gelcoating.

You can spray gelcote, I have heard of this being done, but on my sailboats, I wound up applying a good color matched oil based house paint with a cats paw foam roller. It turned out very well, and was still in good shape five years later when I sold the boat.

You can definitely apply new gel coat. It is a process as I’m finding out right now. I started a complete rehab of my 86 that had been siting in the previous owners back yard for the past 30 years.

It is a process first of all. You’ll have to do tons of sanding and patching. I’ve searched and searched and searched upon this topic. You can either spray the new coats on or use a roller and a brush as some people have done. I opted for the spray method since it seemed more fun to do.

If you have a lot of dings and dents or any cracks you’ll want to address those before proceeding. Also you’ll have to strip off all the windows and any vents that you can prior to start. Expect a two month project easily unless you have time to work on it every day.
