Replacement glass for side windows?

I have to replace a side window pane because it has a crack. Is it regular plate glass that I can get at the hardware store or is it automotive safety glass? if it is plate glass, any opinion as to replacing these with automotive safety glass?

Thanks,

A local glass shop replaced one pane in a black radius frame Hehr window for me for $25 in about 30 min. It was a side rear Casita window about 16" x 16". The older windows are plate, if yours did not crumble it is not tempered. Mine was plate glass and I just replaced it with plate glass. Replacing with anything other than plate gets more expensive and takes more time.

My experience was just like Eddie's, and I agree with his assessment of the choices.

If you use one of the forum search tools and look for "tempered" you will find some previous discussions of this topic.

One note: The cracks in the Hehr black radius frame are mostly caused by people trying to lock the window when it is not slid to the fully shut position. When they pull the lock lever down/up the lock blade should fit into a groove in the frame. If the window is not fully closed the lock blade will flex the frame and crack the glass, usually in the center of the window.

I replaced the door window glass in my Scamp with laminate... the same stuff they use in windshields. Typically "tempered" is used elsewhere. But I figured if laminate kept a windshield together when a head or other body part hit it, it was good enough for my door. Tempered vs laminate price wise... laminate wins hands down. YMMV
