Reseal skylight on 2003 17 Bigfoot

Although the skylights and vents are not leaking as yet, I thought it was best to plan to reseal . Any recommendations on products and practices before I start, especially for the skylight due to its large size?
thanks in advance.

HI Gary, welcome to FiberglassRV... we're VERY glad you found us! I don't own a Bigfoot or anything with a "skylight" so I'll let those that do answer your question. But, I just wanted to compliment you on being pro-active in the maintenance of your trailer. Good job!

Before anyone else asks.... any pictures you'd like to share? I see you have a trailer profile, but we like pictures in the topics too.

Hi Gary,
I posed this question on the Bigfoot owners board a few years ago because our BF sealent around roof penetrations was cracked and degraded. The advice was for three products: Plasti-Cote (was on the trailer from the factory and suggested by the factory warranty guy),Eterabond tape (a permanent fix and highly reguarded on other boards), or Dicor lap sealent (501 LSW self leveling, white, $5.29 a tube at CW). I used the Plasti-Cote because it was locally available and has held up so far (2 years). I beleive it said something about alkyd with fibers on the red and blue can. They make several products. I cleaned off the loose old sealent and laid it on medium thickness.
Good luck, Tony

I had a leak in my overhead vent fan and went to an RV dealer in Dallas for a recommendation as to what sealant to use to correct the problem. He recommended a sealant called C10, a self leveling product that, after removing the orginal sealant, did an excellent job of resealing the vent and has remained leak free for several years. It's the only product I''ll use on my Scamp and I carry a tube with me at all times. It may seem a bit expensive at $10 a tube but it's the best money I ever spent on my Scamp!

Gary,

I just replaced my roof vent in my 85 Bigfoot with a Fan-Tastic vent 6600. The RV place here recommended the Dicor lap sealant and I am very happy with it - sits down nice and adheres well (ok, something along the lines of "...to a blanket"). So a touch messy (there's some skill involved).

I had to remove many years of dried out sealant around my old vent. I found it was quite brittle, but still adhered well. I used a 1" wood chisel to scrape it off (a LOT of work) and got back down to the clean fiberglass surface.

So you could choose to either remove all that is there, or seal over top of it again.

Cheers,
Keith
