Sanitizing the Fresh Water Tank

Hi Everyone:

As you may know, I have a new, used Bigfoot.

My husband wants to flush out and sanitize the fresh water tank.

What have you all done? We'd appreciate any suggestions regarding products and ways to ensure that we have a safe water tank.

Congratulations! That's how I got my Casita, the previous ownder upgraded to a Bigfoot, and it was a beauty!

I'm sure you'll get lots of replies, and you can search the site to find even more, but for right or wrong I just put in a little bleach, fill the tank and let it sit, then open all the faucets and run, run, run! Then flush again with clean water and run some more. It's hard to get all the chlorine taste/smell out afterwards, but since we drink bottled water anyway (our city water has too much arsenic and sulfer to be drinkable) it doesn't matter much. There are a couple Owners Manuals on the BOCI Forum that give the procedure for sanitizing a fresh water tank and lines. This forum also has some older Bigfoot trailer manuals you might find useful. Use 1/4 cup of bleach for each 15 gal capacity. Contact time is 3-4 hours. Drain and thoroughly flush the system afterward.

I do have an older owners manual that does not address this issue. I recently joined the BOCI Forum and, taking your advise, I was able to find and download the revised manual that outlines the sanitizing procedure. It also addresses several questions we had regarding the trailer. So good call!
