Tape and Stop

Use red tape to let you know you're getting close to the drill stop.
Use blue tape to let you know you're getting close to the red tape.

For a drill stop I'll put a piece of hose over the drill bit, with the depth I want sticking out. But; I have a lot of various size hose and plastic air brake line laying around, so I suppose I have an advantage there. Even a piece of copper tubing will work. Wife wonders why I save all that stuff!

Oh don't they all! But we know it's for that moment of pure ecstasy when that piece of scrap or old bracket or part is "purrrfect" for the job at hand. Just can't beat it.

I tend to use tape, but a drill stop, commercial or old tubing (neat idea by the way) is a nice bit of insurance when the stakes are high. Or the experience is low.

Why not glue it on with silicone? If you ever want it to come off, just yank hard and it will.

Oh no... NO SILICONE, ever, ever, ever. Besides caulk isn't appropriate for this application due to wind pressure under travel. IMHO that gravel guard would end up sailing to the next county.

Thanks Roger, "stuff" made an impression on the wife recently when we were looking for a way to attach a couple storage baskets to drawer slides to mount under the bed. I pulled out a parts bin of various size loop clamps, found a couple that would fit perfect, and tried it out, to the comment of "where do you get this stuff". However I didn't have enough of the right size and had to order more from McMaster Carr. Online ordered Sunday afternoon, they arrived Tuesday!
