A la the Bed dimensions topic, let's compile a list of dimensions of the various molded fiberglass travel trailers.

It's been suggested that we want:

Exterior Length (from tip of the tongue to back of the bumper)
Exterior Width
Exterior Height (mention if rooftop Air Conditioner or vent cover is included)
Interior Height (floor to ceiling)

And, also, possibly, distance from the door (threshold) to the ground...

Please be clear about which model of which brand you are reporting, and also if you have made modifications (such as larger wheels or high lift axle) that would affect the comparisons.

If there's interest, we could list bathroom dimensions in a separate topic.

Anybody got a measuring tape? Thanks!!

I think that this is a good idea, but it would be nice to do it efficiently. There was an earlier comparison table attempt, which seemed to go off the rails when it attempted to include too much information; that list (which was presented as a PDF file) should have lots of these basic dimensions already gathered.

There are a few bathroom dimensions in topic about the Biggar and Trillium 5500.

Information is good. Lack of information is not so good, but misinformation is much worse. Check facts, and apply common sense liberally.

Where is it, Brian? I'm not actually talking about comparing (reaching any conclusions); I'm talking about just listing the afore-mentioned measurements, like Mike Watters did with the bed sizes.

Are you thinking of assembling it all into one big spreadsheet of specs?

A few humble suggestions:

Some measurements are likely more critical than others. For most, exact total length isn't a serious issue and a rough measure may be sufficient - but total height is more critical (garage-ability). Interior height is very critical for some (at 6' you'd think it would matter more to me than it does).

The height of the step into the trailer would be VERY good information for people who are mobility impaired. I sure as heck noticed the difference when we went from the Boler to the Esterel.

Listing the unloaded weight would be a nice addition as well - but harder to collect. I wouldn't trust the advertised numbers - so you'd have to take an empty trailer into a set of scales.

I -do- think Brian makes a good point about data overload. If the chart has too much, it becomes awkward to use and then isn't. Besides - you don't want to answer every comparative question someone might have. They're good conversation starters.

In short: The K.I.S.S. principle applies. Perhaps an extensive list could be compiled of every measurement that MIGHT be included in such a table and then ask people to vote on their 5 - 10 most important when buying. Then just include the top vote getters.

Mike

No! That's way too much work, and like you say, the published weights of the different trailers are too unreliable.

I am just thinking of making a table, in this topic, like the one you put together for the beds. The only dimensions on it are going to be length, width, and height -- with height divided into exterior, interior, and from ground to door threshold.

If nobody wants to do it, that is completely and totally fine with me, too.

Mary,
Here are the measurements on our 1982 13' Scamp:

exterior length: 13' 6"
interior lenght: 10'
interior width: 6' 6"
interior height: 5' 11" (it's supposed to be 6' but I didn't find that anywhere!)
threshold height: 8 1/2"

I wasn't able to measure the exterior height or width but based on the above info, a good estimate of the exterior height would be 6' 8" (without roof vent.) The exterior width would be about 6' 9" (including belly band.) No modifications have been made that would affect any of these measurements.

Hope this helps!
Sandra

I understand that problem, 'cept mine is a two step one. First, my several measuring tapes often don't make it home after I use them, so I have to hunt them down so I can pull their little gradient things out.

This, of course, requires that I be able to see well. I have several pairs of reading glasses, but I often put them down somewhere . . .

I have no problem locating either of my tape measures...I phone my oldest son and..."Voila!" they are both at his house. This is handy since my trailer is still over there too.....

Hey Alf!
All my outdoor, camping, and canoe related books have shown up over at my sons place. Not to mention tools and gardening equipment. Is this a genetic thing?

We will be picking up our Scamp 16 foot layout 4 soon. I would like to know the width of the front door and the actual floor space from door to bathroom and bunks down to the start of the bed/table. Could anyone help me with this? I am trying to figure out if I can keep my dog in a soft crate and still get to the bathroom door if need be during the night
; )
Thanks, Renee

We can`t keep anything in the isle with our 95lb golden. We do not have any trouble going into the bath/potty area B/C she lies in front of the door and there is enough room under door that it passes over her as we open it. She does not even raise an ear as we pass in the night. We have layout #6 side dinette front bath. Carl
