Wax peeling off my Burro

What is best way to remove old wax peeling off FG trailer exterior ? I’ve seen posts saying to Use Bar Keepers Friend to clean fiberglass surface but I’m trying to remove what appears to be old wax. Peels off and looks kinda milky white, not clear.

I've never seen wax thick enough to peel of like that. sounds like someone put some sort of clearcoat over it. clear coats are an SOB to remove, the one on the hood of my graphite black 25 yr old car is messed up, and I've made a few stabs at buffing it off with heavy cut cleaner compound and just made things worse.

you'll probably need to wet sand the whole thing with a fairly fine grade wet-dry paper, maybe 800 or 1200, and a whole lot of elbow grease, then use 2000 and finally 4000 wet sandpaper, and a polishing compound to restore the smooth surface of the remaining gelcoat, then put a wax or polymer finish on it.

Hummm, wonder if it's Poli-Glo or ZEP? Certainly doesn't sound like wax. IF it's either of the aforementioned, there are strippers available.

Sounds like mine when the ZEP “Wet Look” floor polish needs to be stripped off with ZEP’s “Floor Stripper” product (found at Home Depot). I just wear rubber gloves, apply full strength to a small section at a time, and rub with a “Scotch Bright” pad followed immediately by a stream of water. Re-apply the Zep Wet Look Floor Polish with a white micro-fiber cloth in very thin coats (four to five coats) and you will have a brilliant shine that will last over a year if left outside in the Arizona or Florida sun, or several years if stored inside. Not difficult, but it will take a few hours to do a 17’ trailer. It is the only “wax” that I have found that lasts more than 3 months out here.
Happy Trails

I'm thinking the the coating may be ZEP, too. I am adding a picture of the peeling material.

Well Ron, I've never seen a clearcoat peal like that. I doesn't look like the Zep does when mine starts to flake. Looks like what ever it is was applied real heavy, it's more like paint peals. Let us know how the stripper works on it...full strength.

There were a lot of bad clear coats on new cars in the 90s thru early 2000s. Water-borne base coats were being phased in and two-stage paint systems took over from single stage. The later model Burros fit that timeline and may have used some of the same finish materials.

Could also be one of the add-on "protective coatings" the RV dealers love to sell... Don't remember the name of the product my finance guy at Holiday World RV tried to sell me, but a quick google search for reviews (while sitting in his office) made saying No very easy. The search even turned up a few product complaints with the Better Business Bureau...

Whatever you've got, my guess is it's a spray finish that's failing. Abrasive removal by sanding and polish seems inevitable.

I don't think it is an automotive type of clear coat. I have experience with a Ranger and a 2007 Prius that had clear coat peeling. When I peel it off it looks like a milky white film and is very fragile. I noticed that it appears only the window 'glass' was masked since the window frames and all louvered doors and access panels have the material on them. Must have been sprayed on. I'll update after I try the ZEP remover.
