12 volt LED bulbs

Can any body tell me why these 12 volt LED bulbs could not be used in an RV with a converter?

I have never seen that disclaimer before.

Not for RV/Trailer use when used with converter. RV power fluctuations can damage a regular LED light.

No doubt because the are cheaply made (no regulator) and not tolerant of the higher voltage a converter will sometimes put out (like when charging the battery or going into equalization mode, if it has that mode).

When our converter is plugged into 110v "shore power", the voltage at our 12v DC plug usually reads 13.6v. When nearby air conditioners cycle on and off, I suspect that there is a spike in the AC voltage that translates into a corresponding spike in the DC voltage.

If I am remembering correctly, if an LED bulb is not designed to handle fluctuations in voltage, some of the light emitting SMDs can burn out or start to flicker on and off.

I have had to replace a number of cheaper LEDs because they were flickering.

Perhaps someone else may have a better explanation.
And, of course, .......... YMMV! 😉

Good luck! 😊

I recently purchased 4 very bright 12 volt LED bulbs dirt cheap on ebay - $6 shipped for all four (shipped from the USA - arrived in a few days). It was a 5 minute job to swap out the outside, bathroom and table light bulbs. I don't know if they will last but they put out plenty of low energy light! For six bucks, why not? 4X Cool White 1156 BA15S 50 SMD Car RV LED Turn Signal Light Bulb 1141 1073 1003 | eBay

Hi Hugh,

Great buy! Just in case, you might want to watch for any heat build up. I've found some of the bulbs with a large amount of LEDs to put out too much heat. A couple even warmed up the double-backed foam tape to where it curled. I've gotten them from USA and direct from China, and all the ones I got performed the same way. So I'm trying out some 24-SMD ones now, and so far so good.

THANKS! We've been looking for quite a while, Paul wanted these very much so we bought 8. Coming from Washington, so shouldn't be much of a wait (they said Saturday). Will post if they don't work out.

Old Converters

Interesting.

Might be cause some older original converters had
no voltage regulation. The original converter in my
'78 Trillium measured over 19VDC at the outlets
with no load applied.... Probably would fry LED
bulbs. The WFCO WF-8725 I installed in the trailer
many years ago has not affected the life of the
inexpensive LED bulbs I bought on Ebay.

Good Luck
