Here are a few photos of the repair. Trying to complete a few more little repairs ie, window sealing, shell cleaning and gel glossing, chip and small ding repairs, before our maiden Burro trip to our favorite camping in New Hampshire.

Get in the habit of checking the area on the sides of the vertical seam in the first photo, as well as the bottom of the other side for beginning stress cracks. These are the points of maximum stress, plus the seam edges will have been weakened by the welding heat.

Here's a photo of the fix (not finished in photo) a welder friend did on my frame after an axle replacement blunder caused a frame crack in front of the axle bracket.

Talking

And remember that when adding reinforcment plates, angled welds are stronger than vertical (straight up and down) welds. Verticle welds are a potential weak point. Larry

Rozanne this repair looks great. I appreciate the pics it helps me to visualize the solution to the same problem on my project.

Rozanne,

Do you have any before photos of the repair so we can see what you fixed?

Pete,
What was the welding blunder? I've finally got my axle on order and do not want to make the same mistake.

During my second axle change in Washington (they ordered the first axle without EZLube and brake flanges the first time), someone managed to overheat the frame on the bottom. That being the worst place to make a weak point, of course it cracked in the heated zone.

When I noticed it, I drilled a 'stop-crack' hole and then took it to a friend in Florida where I happened to be. He effectively doubled the size of the frame at that point (notice all the nice angles he put on the repair part and he even made it so it would not be difficult to change the axle in the future -- See photo in previous post).

If you look in this Before photo, you can see the crack running alongside the bead (Photo is looking up at the bottom of frame).

Dexter actually recommends use of the weld-bolt bracket for attachment to tube frames like on the Scamp. It allows subsequent replacement of the axle without further welding.

Attachment to Structural Tube Type Frame
a. Dexter Axle recommends the use of side mounting hangers
when mounting axles to tubular type frames. These hangers
provide a convenient means for bolting the axles in place. All
of the necessary components are included in the Side Mount
AP kits listed in Chart 1.

Search under Topic. "13' Burro trailer repair". That particular post grouping also has a few pics from others. I should have just tagged the updated photos with that group. The replacement pieces we used were also box metal, sleeved over the break areas. i do agree that angling of the welded section is stronger and we angled where we could. I will certainly be checking the frame during our trip. My welder brother has repaired many trailers so I have confidence that it is a good repair. But it doesn't hurt to check every once in awhile.

Besides the angle, for a spot repair a 'fish plate' is sometimes welded over a crack or at a weak point or between two pieces (Picture one of the religious/Darwin stick-on fish without the tail extensions). The point of the angles or curves is to prevent putting all the stress at one point.
