Question 1979 Scamp door lock help

Hello,
We recently got our first camper, a renovated 1979 Scamp. Went camping and realized we don't seem to have a way to lock the door when we're inside. Are we missing a piece? Should we just get a new lock from somewhere? We're not very handy so thank you for any advice!

Beth

We have that same door latch on our teardrop except ours has a little flip lock on it. I can't remember where I got it. Check Scamp's parts listings for a replacement. I think they just had a little pin that stuck in a hole to lock it.

I see that you have an aftermarket outside handle.

You might want to cut a bit off of that shaft.
You could copy the newer (but still old) Scamps and drill a hole for a pin to lock it.
Or buy a lock (if they still have any) from Scamp with the pin lock.
Or add a screen door deadbolt (its a little smaller than standard)
Or replace the whole thing with a regular RV deadbolt.

This is what it should have had, just drill a hole and I’d cut that shaft off. I would not change anything unless you have the stock 112 key.

Ahh Ken beat me to it with the photo.

Just dont drill the hole too far!
All the "lock" is, is a pin that sits under the lever preventing it from going down.
This will stop a causal opening of the door.
There is little need for anything more secure since anyone who wants to get in bad enough only needs a few minutes to remove the outside hinge bolts.

I realized a few years ago that some questions are asked repeatedly by new owners. I have some prepackaged responses to said questions ready to go. (I no longer post to Facebook, but others are still posting that picture there.)

There does not appear to be any reason to replace the lock set, but scamp has them at fairly low cost with the hole pre-drilled, but to small for the existing pin. You still need to cut the shaft off flush. I bought one along with
2 new hinge kits this past July. The shipping is almost as much as the parts.

Our 1982 still has the rusting chain with a cotter key to stick in the hole and lock the door.

Put a paranoid filter on the door so only non-paranoid people can get inside.

You might also want to put some anti hing pin removal on the outside of the door.

My wife and daughters use the pin when they’re dressing to keep me from barging in. They usually finish before I can get the door off.

We never camp anywhere I wouldn’t feel equally safe in a tent.

I have one of these on my 2005 Scamp. Slammed the door one day and got locked inside; door handle would not open. Does anyone have a way to unlock the door from the inside? Only advice I got was not to slam the door, duh. There's gotta be a way to unlock it from the inside when it won't open...help

First of all, know your emergency egress. On the Scamp it may be in the roof or the back window. Always keep a set of small tools inside. A common screwdriver can push the latch back and a phillips can take the latch off. And no, there is no way to unlock from the inside, so do not leave the keys in the lock.
