1985 16' U-Haul VT Advice

Hi Group!

We would greatly appreciate your advice regarding our newly acquired 1985 16’ U-Haul VT. The inside is very clean and in good condition and the outside needs some work. We are considering having the exterior restored, but want to maintain as much value and originality as possible.

Here are a few comments and questions:
-Everything works including the conditioner, heater, electrical, etc.
-We believe it’s all original with the U-Haul name on doors, ice box, etc.
-There are two areas of minor fiberglass damage on the exterior. We were thinking of having it professionally restored.
-Should we remove the “Vacation Adventure” and “Vacationer “ decals since they are a bit faded and worn?

Can’t wait to hear your comments and recommendations!

Thanks.

Congratulations on your VT purchase! We have one too. I used to know where most of the know 10 or 11 were. This makes 3 I found out about in the last 3 days that are different.
Your exterior is original but the inside is not. Originally, the doors are are a little browned than the walls.
Our remaining stickers were faded too. Hubby painted them.

I want to add that it looks sharp and welcome to the VT family. Two of us were at the fish fry this weekend.

Looks like yours came with all the parts and is in remarkable good shape. I would chech out the wiring and the plumbing as those areas were a problem with my VT. you will enjoy it.

Thank you for the kind words. We are looking forward to working on the outside, but are waiting for some recommendations on what to do and where to take it. We suppose a large RV retailer could shed some light, but don't know if they know too much about the eggs.

Why not just scrub it down and put on Polyglow yourselves? That is all the hubby does in the spring. There are a few spots where the fiberglass has chipped away on our trailer, but then, it is a 1986 (Hubby informed me that I always get the year wrong. I think that this is right.). I bet yours would look almost as good as new. Ours does when he is done.

Large retailers knowledge mostly pertains to conventionally constructed (aluminum or fiberglass skinned) trailers. Since most molded fiberglass trailers are sold factory direct (or auctioned off as the UHauls were) retailers are usually bypassed in this market.

If you need fiberglass restoration or repair work done, take it to a boat repair place.

We spoke with a boat repair and restoration shop and they said the decals can be replicated, replaced, painted or left off.

Are new U-Haul Decals available? If not, what would you do?

Again, we really appreciate your responses!

Spencer,

You could pop on over to uhaulcamper and PM Forest Field. He was working with a guy who was making at least the front ones for the VT.

Hubby just made his own design on our VT. We had the side decals but not the front when we bought it. We probably would have gone with Forest's decals if we had not purchased our VT a few years earlier.

Forest responded to my question with some good advice. While she didn't offer up any particular sign shop, a member of our group PM'd me with sample VT artwork and stated he is in the process of having them made.
