30 Amp Extendtion cord? How long do you use?
I'm shopping for a 30A cord. Our trailer has a 25'? cord on it. My question is how long do you use? My buddy says go with a 25' my brother says there have been times he has needed all 50' of his? I want the black one so we don't have to look at the yellow. He thinks yellow is the only way to go, Kids don't trip on it? Your thoughts please.
I'm leaning towards the 50' black. What works for you? Thanks

How about two twenty five footers? I do this when I might question service availability.

We carry 3 25' yellow cords for flexibility of use. I like the yellow for visibility, too. I also carry a couple fresh water hoses, one is 50 feet. When we stayed on Manitoulin Island (Lake Huron) last summer, I needed about 75 feet of power cord and water hose to reach the hook-ups for our site.

Walmart has a 30A extension cord in the RV section. I think it is 30ft long but not sure. Plugs nicely into the 30A cord coming out of the trailer. Mine stays underneath the main cord all coiled up. If I pull my trailer cord out and it's not long enough, there is my extension ready to be pulled out. It's black and I need it every now and then.

We carry a 25 foot, black extension cord and a 50 foot, orange construction type cord. We typically do not pull out the Scamp's cord unless we need it using the 25' extension cord most of the time.
We use the 50' cord for unusual circumstances like when we hook up at our neices home and need 100'. We rarely need more than 15 amps current capacity is usually not an issue.

I'll let you know what Walmart is charging for the extension in stores in the Portland, Oregon area. I'm going there on Sunday.

Just wondering how often have folks actually had to use an extention during the course of the camping season? I can think of only one occasion in 4 years that I have ever had and issue with not reaching an electrical post when camping at a place with power with the standard Scamp 30 amp cord that came with it. In that case I just put the adaperter on the cord and ran the standard extension cord I carry.

I have a Scamp, I could use the extension more often if I had it! I would prefer to back up as FAR as possible from the road, but the standard electrical wire is only sooo long. I'm going to buy an electrical extension AND a longer sewer hose so I can get back from the frontage road as far as possible. What I have works... but there's always that extra ten feet that I'd really like to have! YMMV

Had not actually looked at it that way Donna agree there have been times that I have had to stop short of the position I would have perferred to be as I know my cord can only go so far. I do carry two sewer hoses as I have found I have actually had to use both connected together a number of times.

Okay, back from Walmart. 30 foot, 30 amp. 10 gauge wire, black = $41.74 at ZIP code 97230. I bought it. Sure, I could have run all over town to save a few bucks, but at the price of fuel... I chose not to. Besides, it's not a disposable item. How often does one buy an extension cord anyway? Okay, so if it gets damaged or left behind at the campground.... Adding THIS item to my "leaving" checklist

I picked one up (new, still in packaging) at our last 'Golden Ears' swap meet here in town for $10.00 (Canadian). Good thing about swap meets/flea markets, like in Oregon, NO TAX, .....LOL!!!!

I've carried a 30 foot 30amp extension cord from my first big trip out in 2001. I was at a campground in Coburg, Oregon which had very long campsites. The center isle I was in appeared to me to be setup for motorhomes as the tables and firepit were up front in the site. When I put my little Scamp forward so the door was near the table the sewer hose wouldn't reach the sewer drain. If I was backed up so I could connect to the sewer drain I found my door was opposite the next sites sewer connection. Smelly. Then I noticed when I parked up front the electric cord was stretched to it's limit.
Off to the RV store I went for a sewer extension hose and at the same time purchased the 30ft 30amp extension cord.
I now have an additional 30 amp electric cord which I carry. When I installed my generator I put a dedicated 30amp electric cord from the generator to the electric compartment attached to a 30amp outlet. After cutting the cord to length I ended up with about 16 extra feet. So, I added a male plug and now have another extension cord.
I don't use either one very often but I have them if I need them.

A pair of shorter cords can be advantageous. I only have 20 amp service in my trailer, and I discovered that using a 50 foot extension (orange btw) caused my microwave to not get enough power to start. So I got a 25' cord (yellow, it so happens) and it helped. There is a current loss over longer lengths due to resistance... not nearly as bad as with 12V DC, but it seems to be present in 120V AC nonetheless. So who knows, you may find two shorter cords better than one long one.

Just a few moments ago, I picked up the latest Camping World sale magazine out of my mailbox. There is a 25 foot, black, 30 amp extension cord on sale for $34.99, President's Club price. 50' for $59.99.
