Hi Dave,

Can I ask how long ago you installed your awning rail using the VHB tape and how it has held up for you so far?

If anyone else could chime in on the subject, would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben

Given what they are saying about the "acrylic layer" deforming to take the load, I would be tempted to go for an awning rail with a channel profile

rather than a flat one using the VHB tape.
Attachment 72801

The difficulty then becomes which model of VHB provides the best thickness to use.
Thickness choice is more about conforming to an irregular surface - on gel coat and metal one would not need much - maybe 0.020 to 0.040 at most.

I buy 0.040 usually because the sales volume for 3M results in a lower per foot price of that thickness; I buy in 14 inch rolls.

Denny posted that he called 3M and was told to use the 5952 VHB tape which has a thickness of 0.045 inches

3M spec also lists that tape for commercial vehicle roof vent attachment, which is a good vote of confidence. Available in both black and white, too.

I bought 3M VHB tape on Ebay. Mounted a 160 watt solar panel on top of our Bigfoot using the tape. Then ran a bead of self-leveling compound over the bracket to seal out any moisture. Two years now and the panel is still tight.
