about single to double LP tank conversion

I would like to convert from a single to double LP tank setup. I have two twenty pound tanks and a Double Bottle Rack. Can I use the two stage regulator that came with my Casita single bottle by attaching a tee and two Flexible Pigtails? I don't particularly care about having automatic changeover at this time. How long do the pigtails need to be? I see that they come in several lengths starting at 12 inches. My original regulator vented to the side with the cover in place but I see that the automatic regulators vent in a downward direction. How important is that?

2 tanks

That is how my system is done.
When I talked to the dealer they recommended I not do it because it would be possible to remove one bottle and have the other on with propane under pressure coming out of the hose once it is disconnected(if the other tank is on)

I just make sure that both tanks are off before I do anything as far as disconnecting for refills. I'm still here and no close calls so I guess it can"t be that bad an idea, besides a 2way regulator set up is about $100.00 Canadian. That's about 12 refills for me or 3-4 years of use

Been There

What is described above is exactly how my parent's tent trailer was set up in the '70's.

One night something happened, and a valve handle on a propane tank broke off. We extinguished all fires in the area and let the tank vent. The smell did not please the neighbooring campers, but probably kept the skunks away for an evening :quiet.

When we got home, the side going to the broken tank was plugged and we ran on only one propane tank for many years.

problem solved with a KISS

Thanks to all for the thoughtful ideas and warnings. It occurred to me that the Tee and second pigtail were unnecessary and actually caused more problems. I decided to just move the pigtail from one bottle to the other. KISS (Keep it simple stupid) Savings was $25.00.
