About the rock shield

I know some of you have modified the rock shield to make it serve as an awning over the front window of the 16' Scamp with side bathroom. Has anyone simply installed hinges on the bottom of the shield so it can be opened and hang down instead of having to be removed when camped?

If so, what kind of hinges did you use?

Thx.. Sharon

Hi Sharon,
I based my hinged rock guard off of Joy A's plans. I zip-tied the top brackets to the trailer and made two pvc pipe supports to prop the guard open. I store these on the front bunk behind back cushion when I'm traveling. Zip ties keep the guard from flying off in a gust of wind when it's propped open.

Lil, yes I am familiar with Joy's conversion of shield to awning. It's absolutely the way I would go if I wanted a conversion from shield to awning while parked. But I'm looking for something else (if possible). I'd like to find a good method to just place hinges on the bottom of the rock guard (and fasteners at the top) so I can flip it down from the window and have it hang down. Maybe that can't work, just wondering if anybody ever did it.

If it hangs down, it will rub on the belly band. And it won't hang straight down, but out at a bit of an angle... if you care.

yeah I figured that might happen Donna, was thinking I put a rubber baby buggy bumper or some such thing to make it hit that first. I'm just looking for some cheapo way to have the guard NOT up but not need to be stored when I'm parked. I took that dumb little useless yellowing tube off already, stuck in some PC-Marine, and while I was in the area .... LOL

Well I suppose you could put the hinges that are on the guard on the trailer at the bottom? Just sorta reverse everything. But that seems like a lot of work and more holes.
