AC question

The previous owner of my camper had a window unit AC in the cabinet at some point in the past but it was removed before I bought the camper. He put a big vent in the outside of the camper but when he removed the AC he covered the inside of the vent with aluminum and sealed it with butyl tape.

My question is,if I remove the aluminum sheet from the vent will water get into my camper?I have already built everything to put another AC in the cabinet but I dont wont to take the aluminum off of the vent if it will leak.

Sorta looks like a plain ole passive vent. I'd leave it alone, unless you're planning on fiberglassing the entire area and getting rid of the louvered vent. YMMV

Brian, if you're reinstalling the A/C.. it needs to vent. I guess I didn't read your entire post first. Will you have the A/C vented through the bottom if you don't vent it out the side?

The hole in my camper is a lot smaller than the vent so something like this would work right?

I used a similar model vent door for my upper fridge vent, replacing a larger fixed vent. I used snap caps on the screws (for the original vent plate) that I just put back where they were.

The wheel well structure and the closet wall define how big of a recessed vent will fit. I have the same issue on a trailer I am working on. Unless I use a custom made door/vent or do a lot of glass work the scab vent is my best option.
Trailers with W/H and Frig. have vented panels. Mostly road spray comes into these vents but I have replaced floor panels under these vents. I would make sure the wood under the vent is sealed.
If you are not going to install an A/C I would leave the backer plate in place.
