Okay, having never deployed an awning before in my life, I consulted the Owner's Manual that came with the trailer documentation on the awning.
I suppose I'm being over cautious, but I don't want to damage anything or create a malfunction. I'm reading in the manual to release the brake control, etc. That's all good.
The part that has me stuck is "Hook loop of center pull strap with pole and draw the awning away..."
Large trailers have a pull strap about in the middle of the awning. If the last person who rerolled the awing just let it freewheel rewinding, the pull loop may have gotten rolled up with the awning. You might try to unroll the awning by hand to see if the loop is uncovered.
Am I missing something here? 
Thank you. Since there was a pole in the trailer, maybe the loop will turn up after all. Thought I was losing my mind!
