Trailer: 13 ft Scamp

Just purchased a 2005 scamp 13ft. The owner said it used a 2" ball yet the owners manual says 1 7/8". There is other info in the owners manual which appears outdated and incorrect. (plug wiring). Does anyone know what size the ball would be on a 2005 Scamp 13 " ?

My 2004 was 1 7/8". I think they went to 2" with the new, improved post-fire 2007 model.

Look on the top of the hitch that is welded to the camper and it should state the size. That is the size of the ball you should install on the tow vehicle.

If U can’t find where it states the size then a 1 7/8” ball will be extremely sloppy in a 2" hitch and a 2" ball will not go inside the 1 7/8' inch hitch.

Here’s the solution:

Go to one of the following, Northern Tool, Tractor Supply, WallyWorld, Advance Auto and purchase one of those multiple ball mounts and U will be ready to pull a trailer with any size ball.

Or buy one of each, return the one you don't use!

Better yet... call Scamp... 1-800-346-4962. They may ask for the VIN number, so be prepared.

Darwin's right: read the coupler, or if the trailer is still with the previous owner have him read it. Many people don't realize the information is there, because it is generally stamped in (not printed on a label).

Since those ball mounts with three permanently mounted balls do not allow adjustment to the correct height (they're zero-rise, for all sizes, only), I would not want one. I vote for Donna's solution: get both, and use the one which is right. Balls are so cheap you could give away the extra one and it wouldn't cost much more than the cost of driving to the store to return it.

Better yet, Get one of these kits and you can bolt it on as required and U are ready for any size hitch.

I looked at the Convert-A-Ball (and similar designs), and in combination with an adjustable-height ball platform they could make a pretty cool universal tow connection.

On the other hand, the interchangeable balls and adjustable mounts are so much more expensive than fixed-size stuff that it's cheaper for the person with a couple of trailers (like me) to have a ball mount and (normal) ball combination for each trailer, than to have one universal setup. Maybe it's just me, but I don't find it difficult to switch balls in a mount, either - two minutes and one wrench, and the ball size is changed.

My 13' Scamp Deluxe is a 2005. I bought it new. It has a 1-7/8" ball.
