Spencer, please be very careful. The first thing you should know is that every wire must have an over current protection. This can be as simple as an in line fuse. It must be sized to the wire. This prevents the wire from becoming a fire hazard.

The 14 gauge wire should be good for
lighting, and a fan. According to the table, 17 amps. Power is amps times volts, so 12 vdc x 17amps is 238 watts, not much. If you plan to power a 3000 W UPS, that requires much larger wire, preferably as short as possible.
