battery connections

I am wondering what to use for a battery connection from the battery to where it splits off...?

It appears that the previous owner used a 110v 14gauge(3) wire,. and it got too hot...?

Spencer, please be very careful. The first thing you should know is that every wire must have an over current protection. This can be as simple as an in line fuse. It must be sized to the wire. This prevents the wire from becoming a fire hazard.

A quick search on google for a fuse table:
The DC Wiring Page - Connectors, Fuses and Wire

The 14 gauge wire should be good for lighting, and a fan. According to the table, 17 amps. Power is amps times volts, so 12 vdc x 17amps is 238 watts, not much. If you plan to power a 3000 W UPS, that requires much larger wire, preferably as short as possible.

Batteries normally are 2 gauge wire to take the battery load.
