Bigfoot 5th wheel springs
Heading out west at the end of the week, so an inspection of the Bigfoot was in order. Broken spring. Oh Uh. Over to good old Princess Auto, where the correct spring was on sale for $19.99 !! (A large bin of them), with a U-bolt mounting kit for another $19.99! Thank you Bigfoot for using standard-sized springs, and thank you Princess Auto. While the other side looks fine, for $40, I'm tempted to pick up a spare set......

I would change out both of them at the same time and keep the good old one as a spare.

I agree with Bill. Springs sag over time, you'd like both sides to be even. Be sure to change the bushings at the same time you swap out the springs.

Well, Bill & Donna, you were 100% correct. Another spring let go. This time, I took your advice and changed the rest to new springs, shackles and shackle plates. I hereby resolve to take good advice.

I was more concerned the trailer would sit lope sided because the older springs had relaxed. I've seen that happen in older cars!

Note to self to check the springs on the 5th!
Cam, we had that happen on a truck once. It was sitting in the driveway with a big overhead camper on it. I heard it break from in the house. It took a while to figure out what the noise was. A few weeks later the other side went too.

Cam, hubby wants to know where the spring broke? Was it at the eye or somewhere else?

Couldn't get under there for a look-see. All I know is that the tires were way too close together......

The longest leaf spring broke at the end of the next biggest leaf, some distance from the eye.

Thanks Cam. Hubby will definitely check ours. I know he said there was a missing bushing, so we know all of these needs to be replaced. We know that some work has been done to the suspension in the past we found extra pieced wrapped up and labeled in one of the hatches when we started going through it yesterday. Unfortunately we had to stop our work and go assist our kids with some electrical woes in their "new" apartment.
