Hi,
We were lucky enough to have the old owner tow our trailer to our house - so we know the backup lights on the trailer work - but when we hooked up our truck to the trailer the clearance lights and brake light function but not the backup lights. We had our Mazda truck changed from a 4pin to a 7pin so is it wired wrong? Any suggestions?

Back up lights are one of the common "Options" for the auxiliary pin on a 7 pin connector. If your car was not wired for back up lights on the aux pin at the time of the 7 pin installation, that could explain your problem.

I have a 7 pin connector, but nothing is wired to my aux pin.

Gina's right! BU lights are an option on the 7-pole connector. The wire from the truck goes to the yellow center wire on the connector.

Note: If you are going to run more than just the two bulbs in the trailer fixture, consider adding a relay on the truck to handle the load and not stress the truck wiring.

Thank you Gina & Pete for the information - I called the RV place where I got the wiring installed and you are right it was an option - they told me a lot of the older trailers & tent trailers dont have backup lights so they didnt wire it in. I assume I dont have to have them.

You would have to check your local laws, but I don't know of anywhere where it is a requirement for a trailer.

I can't really think of a reason for them, unless you do a lot of nite backing. In the rare case where I need light back there, I set out a flashlight, or even turn on the rear cabin lights and open the curtains. The side light outside by the door can be used as a runway marker on my trailer, I have used it before too.

The reason I mentioned the relay was because I was considering using a tractor floodlight mounted on the trailer bumper as an aid when backing into totally dark campsite.
