boler remake
i put a bid at an auction for a boler trailer that has a damaged roof. the back part of the roof has a tree fall on it. it will need aprox 1/3 of the top part of the egg rebuilt.
has anyone ever done this? any suggestions on materials for molds or anything?
thanks

Sure!
And I'll bet your Boler doesn't look any worse than this snow-smashed Scamp did when Norm-the-Optimist got his hands on it:
Here's the link to his redo thread:

Good luck!

Wow, Andrew, you are brave! Its not impossible, and I know that there are a lot of experienced renovators with fiberglass knowlege in this group. Once you get the camper, please post photos so people can understand the areas of damage. And welcome! Its a great community here.

I think that's very fixable! That "bashed Scamp" thread I posted earlier certainly taught me that...not that it'll be easy. But fiberglass is not that hard to work with.
Here's hoping that you win tomorrow!
Francesca

It might be wise to visit the boat repair section of your local marine bookstore. That will give you the most comprehensive book learning. Do keep a step by step photo journal. IT will be cool to see this Boler evolve.

Why not call Scamp in Backus MN and see how much a top half will cost. All you would have to do is take off the belly band and slice the fiberglass on the inside and pop off the top and then pop on the new top re fiberglass the mid section at the belly band and reinstall the belly band. I am top that the Scamp top is the same except 3" higher, which would be nice for more headroom.

Hi Andrew
We've read enough threads to know anything, absolutely anything is possible when it comes to repairing/modifying all molded towables. Looking at that poor bashed in roof... makes me think... lift it! The roof is what I'm thinking. Hummmm. Maybe a slope front to back? Remember, it doesn't have to be perfect... only perfect for YOU!

Well I think the trailer the OP posted is one of the bigger projects I have seen. I was thinking along the same lines as above but thought perhaps finding a well worn Boler of the same vintage as the OP's trailer and taking the top half off and putting it on this one might do it....... when you add up the cost of all the fiberglass supplies etc to fix the current one it *may* be the cheaper option. Could also part out the extra Boler and sell the parts to help cover costs of repair of the first one.
Good luck with it. Hope you post photos of your project.

its been a busy 6 months
I sold me original boler, to a nice lady in Toronto area. Started working on two projects I have, my 82 boler and my 84 uhaul. Little by little I find the time and then about a month ago I bought another boler, this time a 78 17' to add to my fleet
here a few pictures of the roof taking shape. I work only an hour or two in the evenings on it when my wife and son are asleep

most of the fiberglassing i'm doing is from the inside
one reason is to keep the shape of the trailer, and other is for strength. I can put multiple layers of cloth on the inside and most of it won't effect the looks. Its like a giant puzzle trying to put humpty back together again

There's been a couple of owners that have tackled this kind of rebuild. I have NO words to describe what I'm thinking. Other than an image like this:
You've got an 'EL of a lot of dedication to bring back to life a horribly cracked egg:

So its been a while since I have posted on this. I have done a little more work and decided to post a couple more pics. I have decide to sell it as a project trailer due that the fact I have been working on a 17' boler, my three years keeps me very busy and within a week I will have another son to keep my busier.
So If anyone would like to continue this project let me know and I can send you some more pics
