For Tar, use Charcoal Lighter Fluid. I think it is made of Naptha which is a great grease solvent. Used to use it for cleaning greasy auto parts, etc.

3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover. Comes in a quart can which will last a long time. This is what the pros use.

In the early 80's I got the not-so-bright idea of using paint thinner (mineral spirits) instead of bug and tar remover on a '74 Plymouth. After all, I reasoned, the mineral spirits was both stronger and cheaper.

A year or so later, the enamel paint on the car showed clear signs of damage. So now I tend to be more careful to only use products for their intended purposes unless I have done some research.

Methanol is available as dry gas most anywhere just make sure it is the yellow bottle. My son and I had a biodiesel making setup about 10 years ago and got our methanol (mixed it with lye) from a guy who supplied fuel for the drag strip.

methanol should be available in sizes from pints to gallons at any decent hardware store in the thinners and solvents department, usually near painting supplies.

This you might find hard to believe - I didn't believe it until I tried it. Butter works the best for tree sap. Salted or Unsalted!!!

Elvin--I was going to say, "butter," too. It's surprisingly good on all kinds of goo, like price tags and labels and sap. I often use it on garage sale or 2nd hand store items to get both the stickers and the wax pencil marks off. Margarine is also OK, as is mineral oil, baby oil, and Avon's Skin-So-Soft, except that A's SSS leaves a very strong scent. If that kind of thing "bugs" you. (in case you're also trying to remove bugs with it, I don't know if it'll take smashed dead ones off your rigs, but it is highly reputed to keep live ones off of YOU.)
