Bunk hinge shelf/ledge thingy

I have decided not to keep the top bunk in my 13', was wondering what people have done with the ledge that is remaining once the bunk is removed.

Sitting on the couch and leaning back is kind of awkward with this ledge...

Turn it into a place to put "stuff." I've seen where members have actually enlarged the area and turned it into a usable shelf.

My suggestion, whatever you do, is to NOT remove it. The ledge is fiberglassed into the body of the trailer. If in the future you chose to sell, being able to turn that area back into a gaucho could be a selling point...and open the number of people looking to buy. But, in the end... it's your trailer to do as you wish and to make it uniquely your own.

Hi Valerie, Although we did the front dinette mod you could still do the same thing with your ledge. We cut a narrow shelf to fit the curve of the Boler and screwed it onto the ledge. It is another surface to put things(always needed). You could also add an edge to keep things from falling.

I took the couch back/upper bunk off my Scamp 13 also. I simply used a 1/4" x 3" piece of oak the same length as a ledge and screwed it on using the holes that were left from the couch back hinge.

I now have a nice little shelf for odds and ends. Speaking of ends, I did not put anything on the ends and to date nothing has fallen off. It's amazing the stuff I put on it from coins, to Sony CD Speakers, to pens/pencils, to keys etc.

I have pillows that I place against the wall and I've not noticed a problem with the shelf hitting me in the back. Without the pillows I could not be comfortable sitting on the wide couch leaning against the front wall of the trailer as my feet would dangle.

After removing our bunk hardware we kept trying to put small objects on the ledge, only to have them promptly fall off behind the cushion. I was at Lowe's one day & spotted a piece of gallery rail in the kitchen cabinet department. The rail is about 3 feet long and only 2 or 3 inches high. I painted it, then drilled holes through the ledge & screwed the rail to the ledge from underneath. Now we have an official shelf to hold our walkie-talkies, cameras, etc.

TA DAA--no more things falling off behind the cushion!

Slide a piece of pipe insulation on it and it becomes more comfortable to lean against

I second the recommendation not to remove the ledge! It was removed from the 13' we just bought, and now I'm totally at a loss to figure out how to replace it -- especially now that I hear that it was fiberglassed into the body of the trailer! Yikes. I hope it will be possible somehow... we've got kid #2 on the way and eventually will need a place for him to sleep.

How do I cut the upper gaucho "bed" part out of plywood? Is it the same template as the cushion? I have the ledge and it has hinges on it, and one cushion. I need the top bunk for my daughter, but I don't know what shape it is. Any hints? Thank-you
