Butyl tape sizes for Casita vent, windows
Hey folks,
I'm tackling the leaky street-side window and leaky roof vent on my Casita. Going to run to Napa Auto Parts for butyl tape, but am unsure on the size (width) that might be recommended. Any suggestions? My choices are at the following linkie, if that helps...

I don't see any there that are appropriate (although I don't have a Casita specifically).
Issues I saw (I looked at all the individual links that came up when I searched "butyl"), were that either the profile was round, which is not good; or, if flat, it was too narrow (I don't think I saw anything over 3/8"; I like 3/4" at least; preferably 1"). Also, I did not see the thickness listed, which is good to know. In addition, a 15' roll will not get you far and it seemed expensive compared to the 50' rolls I usually buy.
I looked for butyl tape locally (RV places, glass stores, "good" hardware stores, automotive stores; roofing places) and was not able to find it, so I had to order online. I have bought 1/8" x 3/4" and 1/8" x 1", both in 50' rolls, for under $10. I would think similar specs would be good for the Casita.

Hi Bruce,
I don't know about auto stores, but butyl caulk is often available at "real" hardware stores. Ace in particular. It's typically sold as gutter and flashing sealant.
That said, Michele was asking about butyl tape.

I have found it by searching "butyl tape" "tacky tape" (a brand), and tremco tape. Vintage Trailer Supply sells it, but only in 3/4" (I wanted 1").
Note that there is also non-butyl putty tape, which to my mind is not as good. Scamp carries the non-butyl type (at least they did when I called to ask about a year ago).

Camping World or nearly any RV seller/reseller that has a parts department has what you need Michele. There's a ton of those places in northern Oregon....

Hey Michele - I don't know if you've used the tape before but you can join sections double the width. It's very plastic. I bought some at Camping World as Donna suggests, then I found there were two colors (a sort of a light brown and a dark beige) as well as a couple of widths and thicknesses at the RV repair store. But it's all convenience.
I just wanted to be sure you weren't concerned about getting specific lengths, 'cause you can use anything leftover.
Regards,
Matt
