I need to take the trim off the inside of the windows to install curtains, will the outer unit stay in place while I have the inside trim off?

As long as you don't press against it too hard it should remain in place due to the adhesion of the butyl tape sealant strips applied between the window frame and the outside surface of the trailer. this butyl sealer tape is what makes the installation water-tight.
