Changing the locks

Several years ago the door of our Boler was stolen while it was in storage. We replaced it with a scamp door, but there was never a key for the lock. We installed a feeble lock above the main door handle, but I'd like to get the real lock working. My Dad seemed to think that just drilling out the pop rivets on the inside would allow for the 2 halves of the system to come apart and that a locksmith could replace the cylinder.

I suspect from the fact that the outside silver handle including the mounting flange turns when the inside handle is turned indicates that the key was lost while the door was in the locked position, but maybe that's faulty logic.

I saw in another post how Donna D. bought a garage door handle at Lowes and modified it to be used with a scamp door. I have drilled out the rivets, but I can't get the halves to separate. I can see the square shank on the inside but am afraid to pound too hard trying to drive the shank and separate the two. Does anyone have any advice?

WD-40 a couple of times over several hours. Then use a screw driver (or punch) and hammer to drive the shaft to the outside. It definitely looks like it's "welded" in place due to rust.

BTW: I had to replace the door handle because the locksmith said the cylinder wasn't replaceable. YMMV

I would add to Donna's post that gentle taping with a punch tends to get the WD -40 to penetrate better. Spray tap wait, spray, tap, wait. Be patient. Raz

And if the "Water Displacement formula number 40" doesn't do it, there are other forms of rust penetrant available, too.....
