Clear coating?

my 1977 scamp is down to raw chalky fiberglass...

I am looking into getting it clear coated this winter. What are your thoughts, opinions or better idea's?

Ferget Clear Coating.

Try a good scrubbing and 4-6 coats of Zepp Wet Look Floor Finish. There is a very long thread elsewhere, it works great.....

If I was looking at clear coat, I would prep it for paint first, get it painted with a base coat, and then clear coat it. Nothing wrong with painting fiberglass, I did it with a 50 year old speed boat I restored. I used Brightsides on the deck and would never use that stuff again, but now I have another idea. On the hull I used a white racing epoxy, brushed it on by hand with quality foam brushes, and while it took a number of coats, it dries harder than a rock and can be easily wet sanded (in part because it has teflon in it) to as fine a grit as you want and then buffed with a good rubbing compound. Great stuff, and I bet would work great on an older egg, long as you wanted white!

If raw chalky fiberglass means the gelcoat is gone and you're looking at sea green in places, most would say paint it. If raw and chalky but white all over, many would save major bucks and try the polymer floor wax.

Hmmmm.... I used Briteside on my Compact-II with excellent results, 2 coats of under coat and 2 coats of color over a real dark base color using roll and tip, and I get lots of compliments asking who sprayed my trailer. I recommend it to everyone.

You can spend <$20 and some sweat equity. Or, you can spend >$200 with no sweat equity. And essentially get the same "look." The difference is the Zep will need to be redone occasionally and the clear coat will need to be waxed. Your choice, your budget.

One other difference to consider for years down the road when you need to redo the finish. Zep can be washed off with the stripper, clear coat will need to be sanded.

Spray it with 1 50/50 solution of bleach / water, let it set for 20 minutes, wash it off with plain water, spray it again and let set for 20 minutes and this time wash it with a wash and wax solution, let it dry and and see how it looks.

Nothing against clear coat.

We're Zep Wet Look users. Everywhere we go people think we have a brand new rig, forever asking us what we wax with. We don't wax and no wax I've used makes it look as good as Zep.

I used Poliglow on my chalky Burro...people are shocked to learn it's 31 years old, it looks so good. Pretty simple to apply, too. Took me about 1 1/2 hours to scrub & rinse, 30 minutes to dry (on a sunny day), and another 1 1/2 hours to apply about 5 coats.
