Compact Jr. or II fabric pop-top piece

I need to sew a new fabric pop-top connector for our 1971 Compact Junior. Ours came without one. Can anyone who has a Compact II or a Compact Junior answer a question for me? Is there some metal or wood that holds the fabric taut or is the fabric edge fastened directly to the camper? We had thought we'd need to create some sort of metal band or strip of wood band to go around the pop top, but now we are thinking that rolling the top and bottom selveges of the fabric 2 - 3 times, cutting holes for the bolts to go through, and just fastening her on should work. If we could find out how the factory did it, that would be appreciated. Thanks.

I will take a look at it tomorrow and see what I can detail for you. I know it has no metal or wood trim that seals it to the body or top. It is rubber, not fabric (on mine), and it simply is screwed through eyelets to the body at intervals. This setup actually could let bugs crawl in easily, as there are gaps between attachment points, even though it is pulled very tight. The top material may have something sewed (bonded for rubber) into it, such as a wire or cord.

We replaced ours with Sunbrella (70%?) shade material. I used the existing bolt holes to fasten aluminum channel around the perimeter, then used aluminum plates to clamp it into place. It is very adjustable. The Sunbrella material promotes more airflow. This is very nice during warm nights. During cold nights we drop the top and crack the windows (two side and the door). This material is unique in that you can see out but you can't see in during the day.
