Composting toilet

Has anyone installed one of these and, if so, how is it working out? Thanks.

I have no personal experience myself, but I do follow several blogs & YouTube channels with folks who full time in busses and on sailboats...

and we've heard for years that the Nature's Head is the absolute best in composting toilets you can get. ALL owners seem to just love them, and sing songs in praise of them!

We were originally gonna build ourselves a cargo trailer conversion until just acouple weeks ago when we came across the Casita that we bought.
We were 100% on board with installing a NH in our trailer, until our game plan changed.

If we ever have any issues with the factory can in it, we very well will be considering swapping it our for a NH too.

Don't think you'd be sorry with getting one.

If there's a major boat show nearby, I'd recommend a visit to see it in person, if they're attending. I did that myself in Annapolis, MD. Thinking I was going to get the Natures Head for my sailboat but after seeing the Airhead toilet, I went with that one instead. Also look up C-head. Similar product.

btw, I still haven't used my Airhead yet.

Robert, The Fit RV provided a detailed one year review of the Airhead here. They also mentioned why they chose it over the Nature's Head. My understanding is that both brands have similar pros and cons. A sailor youtuber with a Nature's Head also had the same flying insect problem mentioned here.

I installed a C-head in my 13 foot Scamp several years ago. I'm single and only use it for night time and emergencies. I travel Florida for 2-3 months each year and usually go the entire trip without needing to dump the toilet solids. Urine gets dumped every day or two.

I liked it so much, that when I ordered my new 16 foot Scamp, I deleted the toilet from the package. I have now installed another C-head in this trailer. I just returned today from 2.5 months in Florida, and have not needed to empty the solids yet. I do not even bother installing the ventilation kit, since it is optional, depending on frequency of use. I have never had any problems with odors, confirmed by every visitor who has entered the trailer. One time, a couple of years ago, I had a problem with small flies that took up residence. I emptied the solids, and the flies went with it and did not return.

So much nicer, not having to deal with a black tank and worrying about the associated problems. With the composting, it's a simple matter of dumping an odor free, and dry 5 gallon bucket into another bucket or trash bag for later composting. It can be done inside the trailer with a modicum of care, or just step outside to do it. It's a 2 minute job that is usually over before any neighbors even get up their curiosity as to what you are doing.

C-head is a much simpler design that uses a plastic milk jug for urine containment. These can be easily replaced when they develop the inevitable discoloration and scale. The C-head is also considerably cheaper than the other options.

Several older discussions on this topic. Check out:

And then here's a mention of a composting toilet in Add Toilet to Scamp 19.

There is also a very long, very contentious thread on sawdust toilets, which I won't even link to.

my wife and I can exclusively use the flush toilet in our escape for a week, and not fill the black tank. 15-20 minutes to dump and flush the system on the way out, done.

Thumbs up Good Vibes

In order to test a Nature's Head unit BEFORE fitting it into my Casita, I had my customizer set it up in his office and lock his office bathroom door so that his entire staff had to use it. The urine collection was emptied at the end of each day. After one month, it was time to fit the unit into my trailer. The customizer (who has a weak stomach) went to service it and found it about 3/4 full of compost. He was shocked how easy and pleasant service was. So it is replacing the standard Casita toilet and the black water tank is being converted to fresh water.

Hi Lyle,

I've been wanting to install a C-Head in my Casita or a future 13' Scamp (I'm thinking of downsizing). I was wondering where in the 13' Scamp did you install it? I was thinking of getting a 13' Scamp w/o bathroom and putting the composting toilet in the bottom portion of the central storage area by the bed. If you happen to know if it would fit, please let me know.

Also, I really need to be able to compost the TP as well. I cannot see myself putting the used TP in a separate compartment. Does the C-Head efficiently compost and churn the TP or is it an issue with that design?

Thank you in advance for your reply if possible. ~ Maria

Maria, My 13 foot Scamp had a 'Privacy" room at the front. Basically the normal front bath, but without the shower or toilet, so the C-head fit beautifully in there with plenty of room. In my new 16 ft, I have the side bath, with a shower. The C-head fits fine in there as well, right where the factory toilet would go.

Not sure it would fit below the bed, It probably is too high. They do make a "shorty" model that may fit.

Regarding the toilet paper, you CAN put it into the toilet, but the problem is that if you do, the compartment fills up much quicker and you will need to empty it more often. Also the toilet paper, because it is so light, tends to stay on top of the compost medium, so that you see it when you are getting ready to use the toilet. I just keep a large coffee can with a plastic grocery bag to line it in the bathroom. Toilet paper goes in there, then gets disposed of with regular trash. Really not that big of deal, no odors or anything.

Just takes a couple days to get used to it and to get over the mental block. I'm a backpacker, and many areas of the country require you to pack out your toilet paper, so I got over the mental block of putting TP in a plastic bag long ago. It isn't that bad.

We have the Nature's Head in our Oliver Elite II travel trailer purchased two years ago. We are so glad we ordered it for our trailer. One needs to learn how it works and maintain it accordingly. The advantages are many: 1. no sewer smell to deal with 2. no dealing with the "stinky slinky" black water hose, etc. 3. no use of fresh water to flush toilet 4. no extra weight hauling black water 5. No worrying about black water plumbing or problems with monitoring black tank 6. We put an adaptor on our gray-black water flush hose to allow us to use a garden hose to drain our gray water 7. We don't have to deal with dump stations.

Maria,

My wife and I have a 13' Scamp and we use C'head. Our Scamp has a large bed. The Scamp large bed protrudes 10" over the floor. When the bed is down 1/2 of the C'head slides under the bed, the toilet is not quite hidden. At night the toilet is placed in the doorway with its back pointing toward the door. We have a small plywood box that has a toilet paper roll attached and holds the agitation crank and a bottle of deodorant for the urine jug. During the day the box is stored under the front bench.

Works well for us.

BobH,

I just bought a C-Head for my 13' Scamp and I intend to have it in the camper when hauling down the road, but outside in an outhouse tent when camped. My question for you is how you tie down your C-Head when hauling down the road, since it isn't fixed to the floor? I'm trying to figure out how to do it.

Thanks,
Brandon

Purchase the rubber Tie down kit from C-head. Holds the toilet secure when latched, but allows you to unhook two rubberized latches and remove the toilet in about 30 seconds.

As I had posted somewhere earlier, our 13 has a vinyl floor covering. Our C'Head doesn't slide during travel. We have yet to anchor our composting toilet. Usually, our toilet is stored against the step in the floor that is near the bed.

I'm considering storing it against the front bench. The bench supporting the side of the C'Head would reduce the chances of it tipping during a panic stop.

We keep a throw over the C'Head when it is not in use.

I've made a small wooden box that holds the TP and the crank, it is stored under the front bench.

Thumbs Up!

Hi Bob,

I have been using a Nature's Head toilet full time for 11 years.
It is installed in a big 5th wheel trailer. In my opinion it is
way mo bettah than dealing with black water! Easy to dispose
of solid wastes. The liquids have been spread around the
perimeter of my acre property with no ill effects.

Take Care,
Uncle Larry

We're pretty picky types, and honestly, the Nature Head composting toilet doesn't really smell at all - even after a month of use. I was delighted by the comfort that comes from its long seat. That's something most RV composting toilets don't offer and makes for a much more pleasant bathroom experience.

This composting toilet offers a great deal of versatility, as well. People have found this model useful in RVs, campers, yurts, workshops, cabins, and anywhere else one of these devices might be needed.
