Cushion options?

Ok, right now we have an air mattress over the dining area for sleeping. It doesn't get unmade, so that makes the table unusable really. I'd REALLY like to find a solution... something that we can sleep on, then make up the dining area during the day. The problem is, the cushions we have now are hard as rocks!! I'm willing to make new cushions if anyone has ever had anything that they have been comfortable on. If you have made new cushions (or bought some) could you sleep on them? What did you use?

I bought an egg crate mattress that I cut to size....when I make the bed up I roll the egg crate up and fold it and store it in the closet when not in use that way I didn't have to make new cushions just added softness to the top.....some have used the meorey foam ....

I bought an egg crate mattress that I cut to size....when I make the bed up I roll the egg crate up and fold it and store it in the closet when not in use that way I didn't have to make new cushions just added softness to the top.....some have used the meorey foam ....

I've tried the egg crate and was not happy.. Our cushions are not the standard ones, as a previous owner replaced them, and they are hard! My husband had an idea though... we have a memory foam topper on our bed, I'm going to lay it over it and see how that works. If it is good, I might cut some to size, glue them to the top of our cushions now, and make new covers for them. Will be a bit thicker, but not too much. I was wanting to make new covers anyway!

Jim and I sleep in our Liberty trailer using the twin bed mod. We had cushions made in 2007 that work great for us. We use sleeping bags over the cushions - we're been very comfortable.

Sometimes cushions are made hard for sitting, and then they are to hard to sleep on. We find that these cushions are great for day and night use.

Our Camper Cushions :
3" medium foam with 1" soft foam over that and then Dacron on top.
If your cushions covers have a zipper, maybe you could use the same covers.

We had our cushions made at a place that makes mattresses... MELROSE MATTRESS, INC. in North Hollywood, CA. Maybe you can find a locate place near you that could do this.

I made 3 cushions from memory foam to put on top of the original dense foam. The problem with this is that I have to store the three cushions during the day (they get piled up on the small front bed. The reason I made three is that I want my sections in thirds. Nothing worse than my bottom bottoming out between cushions.

Would love to make the dinette a real bed, but we like to use the dinette as a place to sit and play cards, write, and eat.

I posted our cushion choices in a recent thread about allergies. Here's what we've done: we are replacing our bed/dinette cushions with 6" of latex after doing a lot of research. We bought a double mattress from the Foam Factory near us (see www.foambymail.com). We think the 6" will fit in fine with clearance for the table when the dinette is set up.

We were motivated by comfort and longevity/durability, not so much allergies, but I did read about benefits for people with allergies and that latex stands up to moisture and is recommended for marine environments. There is a debate about Talalay vs. other types and synthetic latex...we bought "natural" latex. The mattress was $414.00...not cheap, but that was the best latex price I could find. And not too bad, as new foam prices are shocking. They also cut it to our templates (as we want the option to convert to a dinette) and put on a dacron wrap. I'm in the process of making covers (big job) out of denim because I happened to have a huge bolt of denim.

Note that with the Trillium 15'-er (4500), the double bed size almost perfectly fits, so there was no waste...which helped with the economics. We bought high density conventional foam for our front dinette from the same outfit. I've covered the latex cushions with lining material and we've tried them out. They are very comfortable, so we're pleased so far. The latex is very springy, so I don't expect any bottoming out.

I also saw natural latex mattresses at Ikea for a pretty good price, but they are covered and you'd have to rip into all of that. Sorry to be repetitive, but I couldn't figure out how to link to the other conversation.

We haven't slept on them yet but when I found out how expensive foam was we used the foam cusions from an old sofa, making the dinette the permanant bed area and the small seats at the other end the dinette. There are only 2 of us so it should work. How much entertaining can you do in these small eggs? You need about 6 cusions, cut them to fit your bed size, spray glue the foam together while you are covering them and then with your fabric, using the same method you would use if you were recovering dining room chairs. Used a staple gun into a thin wood backing. Also the covering material is 2 queen sized comfortors on sale at Walmart for $22 ea. Oh yes, if you ever have to cut foam? Use an electric knife. Cuts like butter. For under $100 I have a permanant bed with matching dinette cusions. Oh, and the best thing. They had matching "body pillows" that we are using for the back cusions in the dinette and also to throw accross the bed and use for pillows. The picture below is one of the bed cushions and the matching body pillow. If anyone is interested I could show the back view also how I stapled it on.

I have seen the memory foam toppers at walmart, and they were very resonable. I bought a king size memory foam topper from Overstock.com that was 4" thick, for less than $200 shipped. Has anyone ever priced replacement cushions from the Casita factory????? I wish they had an online parts dept!
