Smile Dometic AC Chirping, Scamp 2014

We bought our Scamp brand new in 2014. It has been in storage since the summer of 2017. We have a camping trip already planned for next week. As we were checking it to make sure it is still in good working condition after hurricane Michael hit Virginia, we keep hearing this chirping noise coming from the AC. I cannot find our manual for the Dometic AC and am asking if anyone knows what could be wrong with it. I also must say that the high winds from the storm pushed the Scamp off the wooden blocks used to keep it the tires off the ground a little bit. Could the impact have caused damage to the AC? I surely appreciate your thoughts!

My guess is that since it has been in storage for so long, it may just need a bit of lubricant sprayed on the fan motor/ shafts. If you take off the top cover of the a/c you can see the motor and fan.

Chirping huh... maybe birds? They sure like living in my A/C (photo)....

But if you mean chirping while it is running, I have almost no idea. Could the fan be hitting something? With winds that high, yes I can see some damage being done.

If it's chirping and not running then check for the Avian Domicile Syndrome, ADS

Are you sure its coming from the AC unit? If its a consistent noise pattern it could be your smoke or CO alarm. Some of these emit a chirping sound when a fault such as a low battery is detected.

Good point.. if the A/C is off then its either birds or something else other than the A/C.

I don't see any CO or smoke alarm along the walls. If we do, where could it be located? Also it is not a propane gas leak because the tanks are not installed since we have the trailer in storage. Would a damaged fuse cause chirping? I am pretty sure that it is coming from the roof where the AC and antenna are located. I don't think that birds are inside the AC because I don't see any access and the chirping is very regular like the chirping from a smoke alarm low battery.

If there is a battery powered smoke or CO detector etc it will chirp as the batteries die.
Of course it's hard to track the beep down if it only happens ever once and a while.

How hard can it be to find a smoke or CO alarm in such a small space? Non-the-less, thats my bet.. a battery powered alarm/detector that OP did not know was there.

Not sure if you've tried this but disconnect the battery & shore power and see if it still chirps. That will determine if it's related to any house power source. May still be a 9V battery powered LP/smoke alarm though.

That's what i thought! There is nothing on the walls. I hope one of you guys knows where it could be located. Very puzzling. I sent an email to Scamp in Minnesota. I will let everybody that kindly responded to my post if they tell me the answer to my puzzle.

From my boating days I know that propane is heavier than air and tends to pool at the low point in the boat and in a trailer's case the propane detector would be close(r) to the floor. At least if installed correctly which is anybody's guess if it's a previous owner's mod. However, in rereading your original post you do say you bought it new in 2014 so it's factory installed which ups the chance it was installed correctly.

From the Safe-T-Alert installation manual:

CAUTION: Propane is heavier than air. For propane gas detection, install this Detector from 4 to 20 inches off the floor.

I'm not saying it's the source of the chirps, just trying to steer you to the likely location of the propane detector.

That is something good to keep in mind since I was not aware that the trailer may have a propane gas detector. However, I disconnected and removed the two gas tanks when I put the trailer in storage, as well as the battery.

Propane / CO detectors have a UL listed life span of 5 years
At the end of the life span the detector chirps at regular interval to signal you need to replace the detector . The propane / CO detector in our 2013 Casita started chirping at about 4 1/2 years of age . We just replaced the detector ,
cost was about $60 and the job takes about 15 minutes.
