I have a dometic portable. Its a typical Dometic in different clothing is all.

Anyway...... the thermostate when on LP. .... is there a thermostate on LP? Of just a dial to turn up the flame (increase temps by increased boiling of the Amonia)

Reason I ask is my unit is outside of my cabin. At night it is nice cold air.. wondering if Im saving fuel cause a thermostate is turning it down...... or if the flame stays constant no matter outside temps?

I don't think I've ever seen a thermostat... but I know you wouldn't be saving much fuel if you did.

There is a thermostat.

Older units use a sensor tube that runs from the inside of the fridge to the gas valve. When the inside temperature is cold enough, only a pilot flame burns. When the inside temperature rises, the thermostat opens the propane valve and a larger flame heats the ammonia gas generator to start the refrigerator process.

I guess in cold weather you could turn the main propane valve off and save the amount of propane it takes to run the pilot light. But what would be the consequence if you forgot to get it going when the weather warmed?

For newer units, many have electronic controls that eliminate the pilot light. I can't see where there would be any saving with such a unit to turn the gas off during cold weather. However, I have never owned this type of refrigerator.

Thank you that is good to hear. I was not planning to turn it off. Just hoping a thermostat might switch it to flame down from heating to pilot only level like you described. I sorta assumed that there was NOT a thermostat since the dial for the propane has an adjustable flame level.

Then again maybe the portable is a little different after all?

Have not actually looked at that part of an RV fridge in some time. Thus, I forget. Does the RV units have a temp level/flame level adjustment for setting temp when on LP?
