Door lock for U haul
I am looking for a new knob/lock system for my 13' U haul. Tried e bay but got tired of searching & thought you all would be able to direct me.

Yeah, the bargman locks are few and far between. What is wrong with yours? Mine was not locking very good with the key so I took mine apart and tightened up and lubed the internals and it works perfect now, if you take it apart (very easy to do), it might just be a loose screw.

Yea, before I paid $210 I'd take it to a locksmith and have it overhauled.

It may not even require that, these things are pretty simple inside, a couple springs, some screws that can loosen and that is about it. Take it apart and check it out, I'll bet something inside just loosened up.

mine was an easy fix....springs......and i bought a tumbler and keys on ebay pretty cheap.
Ive seen simular locks on popup camper doors.....not sure they're the same but maybe they'ld fit.

Mine wouldn't lock at all, took it apart, the spring for the locking part was gone, went to TSC, got a spring pack and made one,works great now.

WOW! You all are excellent! What nice bunch of answers. Could there be a screw loose around here? Say it isn't so! I'll have it in here ASAP and check out it's inners. Easiests thing first for sure. Bless you. j.s.

I couldn't get ours to lock with the inside button. Found out I had to get the key lock centered, then it worked fine.

Bob, Mine also won't lock from the inside and I'm afraid that loose parts will 'fly free' when I take off the inside panel to check it out. But it doesn't sound like it's an awful job? Referring to your quote, how did you get the key lock 'centered' ?

Pam, what I mean is that when using the key to lock or unlock the door from the outside I would turn the key all the way left or right, depending on if I was locking or unlocking. I finally found that the key had to be centered in it's travel, rather than all the way in one direction, then I could lock the door from the inside. Give that a try. I had previously taken the latch assembly apart, cleaned it and greased it with white grease. Not much to it. My door needs some alignment adjusting, but for a quick fix while we were on a trip I just moved the striker part to make the door shut easier. I didn't want to get too involved while away from home. Not sure if adjustments can be made at the hinges, anybody tried that? Bob

Bob,
If you have an '84 check out pages 6 and 7 about door hinges in the repair manual. I tried taking my UHaul to an rv repair place and it cost me an hours labor charge for them to tighten the screws--they didn't really do anything so I still have a crooked hanging door. It closes OK, but looks funny.

I have one hinge that has one loose screw of the three on the hinge, I have been meaning to tighten it (it does not affect the door as the other two screw hold the hinge firm) but haven't gotten to it yet, it is a two person job because you can't hold the nut from the inside and reach the outside screw head by yourself to tighten it. You access the nut by removing the plastic plug on the inside.
