Door squeak......solutions????

this might seem like a small irritant...but as many such things the longer it goes on the more it gets on your nerves.....door squeak !!!

I've poured oil, I've sprayed white grease.....in LARGE quantities on my main door hinges and STILL and they still squeak....driving me nuts!....

Has anybody "been there, done that"....and what exactly was the "done" part...cause I can't seem to find it.....TIA.....trailer is a B17CB....1997 BTW

Would appear that the oil is not getting between the spaces of the hinge. Try some PT Blaster as it has a foaming action and penetrates.

yeah, that's the cause....

the hinge is a series of hinges and in between them there are nylon bushings it looks like....they are probably so tight to the shaft that the oil/grease is no getting to where it need to go.......

I'm toying with the idea of drilling a small hole at the top of each hinge to be able to put the tube from an aerosol lube can right up against the shaft

was just wondering if somebody had some success with other (easier) fixes

I replaced the hinges on my scamp with new due to squeak. No luck. This summer while camping I sprayed the bushing and spring/bolt assembly with silicone spray about once every 3 weeks or so. It worked for that time only, then the squeak would come back, but only on my Lower hinge. I resigned to that's the way it is because with new hinges and still a squeak, what else is there to do?

If you follow the lead of others, when the furnace doesn't work, you remove it. When the fridge doesn't work, you remove it. Hinges squeak ...<_<

I have a rattle noise n my 2012 Chevrolet Colorado somewhere near the dash on the passenger side. Drives my crazy. My wife thinks I'm nuts. I know your pain.

One person of my acquaintance swears by automatic transmission oil for such things as squeaky Scamp hinges. Now for big foot, different animal.

ATF thinned with kero or paint thinner makes a great penetrating oil. Add anhydrous lanolin and you have a good gun cleaner and rust preventative. Should work fine as a squeak stopper for hinge pins and leaves where a spray lithium grease is unlikely to ever go. Jack

I've used something called Tri-Flow on my hinges. I think It is a combination of penetrating oil and Teflon. I've seen it at a number of places, but I got my last can at a local Nuts & Bolts hardware store. Not necessarily cheap, but one or two applications seemed to do the job. I guess it carries deep into the mechanism and deposits enough Teflon to last for a while.
Good luck!
Ray

The only times the hinges squeak on my Scamp, is if it's not perfectly level. YMMV

AND, there's no FRAME problem.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to try that tri flow stuff as the silicone just wears off too quickly. But the scamper is going away for inside storage next week so tri flow will be ordered awaiting a spring trial!

I took my hinges apart and coated the
little brass balls and the bolts with
molybdenum grease and put it back
together. Then I wiped as much grease
off as I could get to.

Now it is silent. I don't know how long
it will last.

Is this a Scamp 13'?
How tight did you tighten the bolt with the spring?
There has to be some movement as the door opens and closes, if it is too tight is will squeak.
Should look similar to this when assembled

I just brought the nut up to the spring. No pressure
but no slack. The first time I had a problem, I dosed
it with a little 3 in 1 oil. That made the squeak go
away but the oil washed out of the hinge and ran all
over the door. The grease it not quite so mobile as
the oil. On the other hand I have not driven the
Scamp anywhere yet either.

An excellent lubricant to use on high pressure areas like door hinges is a product called Door Ease, it would work great on your hinge.

When I bought new hinge assemblies from scamp I just put them on the way they came. I bought them thinking the bushing on mine was shot, but still the squeakers.

Moly grease: is this a pure grease you used or those mixed with lithium? Also, a person earlier on this thread recommended tri-flow to me (I believe it's a bicycle chain/derailed lube). Anyway all I ever ended up using was silicone spray which doesn't seem to last very long. Then hinges squeak again.

That door ease looks like a good product too. Tried to find an msds sheet on it to see ingredients but couldn't find one. The tri-flow I mentioned earlier has Teflon in it.

Door Ease is a good old fashioned wax based lubricant.
I have been using it for years as a mechanic, works and no mess for customers to complain about.
It works well on door hinges and equally well on fan belts that squeak.

door squeak gone !!!

I guess it just took time.....this door squeak drove me crazy last summer.... last fall I hit it with everything I had on hand and could not get rid of the squeak.....then this spring...it's GONE !!!....I suppose it just took a long time for the oil to drip down inside that long piano hinge (made impossible to get to by all those nylon washers/spacers) I'm thrilled....I'm going to keep squirtin' a bit of oil on that thing every now and then from now on.

Tri-Flow to the rescue

Thanks @rdickens for the tip!

I had some of this lying around, and so far so good! While I was at it, I applied the Tri-Flow to the rear swing out stabilizing jacks.

We'll see how it holds up!
