Exhaust fan?

Hi all,

My 1977 13' Scamp, which I am in the middle of renovating, has an exhaust fan/hood with a light over the stove. I notice from pics that not everyone has one of these, and I'm wondering whether I really need it. It would certainly simplify things to simply remove it, but I'm curious as to what people's experience is with this.

My fan was rusty too. So I removed it.

A few of us have filled in the resulting hole with 12 volt computer fans. Mine are very small and don't move much air. Other people have put in bigger fans. It is a good way to give you more space over the cooktop while removing the cooking odors and steam and stuff. But you have to design and make your own.

You can just barely see mine behind the rack with the spoons. Tiny, but they work well.

What do you have on the outside....some sort of louvered gizmo to keep the rain out? I've been thinking of something similar for our Scamp (only 40 more days!!!).

Thanks

Thanks Mouse, that is helpful. I think I will remove it and then configure a new fan. I really like how your kitchen looks without the fan taking up all that room. So, thanks, very helpful!

Louvered would be great but I already had this hood.

It also depends if you cook.

Or, You could remove the hood and fan, leave the vent and install a fantastic fan in the ceiling and when you cook, turn the fantastic fan to move air inside the camper and your fumes would go out the vent you already have.

What you can do is take the housing of the fan, give it a thorough cleaning to get ALL the grease and oil off, buff it with 00 or 000 steel wool then then have it powder coated in the color of you choice. That is what I did in my 17 Boler and it looked great, easy to clean and no more rust.
