Flex-Seal Clear

I just saw a brief infomercial about the new Flex-Seal Clear. Cheap stuff. I wonder how many uninitiated folks are going to buy that gunk to try and seal windows! OH NO!

I've used the black to cover exposed nail heads
on my shingle roof. Works okay for that. Looks
like liquid tar coming out of the can.

Have used the black to seal a crack in guttering-worked great and is still holding after 2years.
Wouldnt use it to fix a leak in a boat, as shown on tv.

Funny you should ask Donna. I just bought a can of the clear today with plans to try it on my Scamp. Not for windows though. My thinking is to make a stencil with a hole a little larger than the size of a rivet head. Then spray over a some rivets in the rear that concern me and a few rivet holes that were previously filled in when the tail lights were replaced. Does anyone have any thoughts on this crazy idea of mine, before I try it? I thought I'd start by doing it on a couple and then seeing how it looks after it dries and bakes in the sun for a month. Concerns are that they may run before it sets up or they may discolor in the sun over time. Does anyone know if it can just be gently removed with a razor blade or some kind of solvent without damaging the FG? Please don't tell me to replace them all using butyl tape and plastic snap covers, because I'm too busy these days having fun camping. Maybe some day...

Linda, I can't answer your question regarding removal of the Flex-Seal, etc. Sorry. I know I won't be using it. Have you considered, where you can, just putting a dab of caulk on a snap cap and using that to attach to the shell? I'd try that where I could. For places without snap caps, I'd pull the part, jam marine epoxy in the hole and redrill/reattach.

Donna, I did try the snap caps but since the '77 trailer doesn't have them on the trailer (I guess they didn't put them on the earlier models), having it on some of them just didn't give it the clean look I was going for. I may reconsider though since its too darn wet and cold to do anything right now.
I'm not sure I buy into Larry's statement about sealants not going on top of things. I'm certainly no expert, but its pretty standard to use caulking to seal items from the elements. If that's truly not the case, I'd like to hear some other folks weighing in on it. I'm just thinking of home construction and the use of caulking. That being said, I have no experience with flex seal and don't want to risk the daming effect you're talking about. What to do, what to do...I thinks I need to go camping.

I have an old trailer and there is no caulking anywhere on it. Butyl tape is all I use to seal items on the trailer to keep out the elements.

Keep in mind houses with caulking on them are not flexing as a trailer does.

Linda, I just keep thinking of clear silicone typically used in bathroom shower areas. It doesn't stay clear for long and I would imagine this Flex-Clear clear would turn green/brown/gray/black before too long too. If you're concerned about having a "clean" look to your trailer, I doubt this stuff will give it that look after a bit of time.

That's exactly my biggest concern. I have no experience with the clear. Okay, I'm definately rethinking this.

You might have better luck with the Proflex RV sealant, available from RV dealers, Camping World, and Amazon. Comes in clear and white.

Despite some opinions to the contrary, sealant development didn't stop with the invention of butyl rubbers back in the 1930's.

Flexseal's penetrating qualities may well make it just the thing for the application you contemplate. My advice is to give it a try . What do you have to lose but the opportunity to completely remove your windows so you can Do The Accepted Thing according to Fiberglass RV gospel?

Thanks Carl. My guess, spray on plastic not rubber (like rubber boots). The marketing makes me skeptical. If you search you get lots of bogus testimonials. The Amazon discussion is interesting.

Apparently at one time they used a screen door in the boat rather than plexiglass with holes. Consumer Reports tried it.

OK I'll admit to using it, the black stuff, and got it at Lowes. I had a very minor water leak around the lower door hinge on our Uhaul. Attempts to seal it on the outside were unsuccessful and I barely could get at the inside because of the inner shell. Finally out of desperation I sprayed some around inside the outer shell where the hinge attaches and stopped the leak. I should have removed the hinge, but I've found some things are best left untouched, and that looked like the case here.

OMG, OMG, OMG. Please let stickies try it first. We want to SAVE all molded towable owners from 'el removing stuff that is a temporary fix (and not create a permanent problem).
