floor damage

The floor under the table/bed of our '82 Scamp has been badly damaged by a water leak & will have to be replaced. I need some advice about how this should be done. The damage appears to be only in the area between the seats, not under the seats themselves.
I tried searching the forums but didn't find anything that seemed to apply. I'm wondering if we can just have the floor between the seats removed & replaced or if it will be necessary to remove the seats & replace the entire floor. We are not handy so we'll have to hire someone to do the work.
Help!:
Sandra

Sandra, the floor has to attach to something.. obviously. I'm thinking the area you're describing doesn't have any frame under it. If that's the case it may be problematic.

Others will chime in...

How bad? How big? What is the nature of the damage?
A picture is worth a thousand words. Two even more.

Sometimes there are options other than replacing.

My '76 scamp had a hole in the same spot.
The best way to repair it is to replace the entire rear floor section.
The frame rails are very far apart in the rear and the center portion of the floor has no support for any sort of seams.
The floor is actually made from 5/8" 3ply interior grade sheathing on these older Scamps. It sucks moisture up like a sponge and is not rated for flooring use.

I ended up replacing mine with 5/8" exterior 5ply and it is a world of difference. The floor doesn't bow when people stand in the rear.

It really isn't a hard repair. You just have to take the seats out, remove the old floor, and cut a new piece to wedge in and fillet the edges with fiberglass.

I took a look underneath & you're right--there is no support at all under the center of the floor. I can see that the whole area will have to be replaced. The original floor was treated with resin, I believe. What did you apply to your floor to protect it? How do you go about removing the seats? Like I said, we are not handy!

I soaked the new panel in Epoxy/Resin and made sure to use exterior grade ply.

The seats have screws on top. Just remove the screws and the seats lift right out. Then, you have to remove the water tank and tuck a few electrical items out of the way.

Thanks so much for the info! I don't feel quite as stressed about the project now.

Grab a few beers and enjoy some quality time with your scamp.

I'll second Roy's comment about pictures and options.
I had a smaller area, 2"-3" by about 20". I used a petrifying liquid. It's extremely thin and soaked strait through the wood very rapidly. Good and damaged wood alike. The next day I sanded smooth and voila!
A friend also mentioned you can get it in a paint and she used it on her Barn with great results. Mine was a small bottle (10oz?) for around $15 from Rona.

Hope this helps.

That is a lot cheaper than the stuff I bought at a Marine place. If only I had known.
