Free 2017 Parks Canada Discovery Pass

Saw this offered on Slickdeals.net

In celebration of Canada's 150th Anniversary they are offering free 2017 Parks Canada Discovery Pass which gives you unlimited entry to all participating National Parks for all of 2017. You only need one pass per vehicle. I know a lot of people here travel to a Canada and thought some of you may be interested.

I ordered one, so we may need to start planning a road trip to Canada.

Unlimited entry, but you still have to pay for your campsite.

If entry is free, why require people to obtain a pass? What am I missing?

Normally, it is not free to visit. You would have to buy the parks pass and then pay for your campsite. So, 2017, the parks pass is free, but you have to pay for campsite.

When the US parks have a free day they just let folks pass through the gate for free. No need to preregister, get a permit, etc. You just drive through the gate.

The annual cost is normally $140 for a family pass, so this is a great offer.

The free 2017 Parks Canada Discovery Pass can be ordered directly from the Canada Parks website to avoid getting a bunch of ads from Slickdeals.net. Still free including postage.

I have VERY mixed feelings about this free pass idea. As regular campers in National Parks, experiencing difficulty more regularly in recent years, I fear we will just have to go elsewhere next summer.

Hazel in Sask..

Where else will you go ??

The reality is that free passes or not, 2017 will see more campsite usage then past years and this trend will continue.. With the Canadian $$ being low ALL campgrounds in Canada, both private and public will continue to be heavily utilized by folks from the States because their $$ goes further (Vacation) and from the folks in Canada who's $$'s don't go as far in the States (Staycation).. The number of folks that RV and camp in both countries is once again on the rise.. This is a good thing in my mind..

My suggestion - plan ahead and make a reservation ;-)

ps.. The Province of BC recently announced an additional $$24 million over 5 years to it's BC Parks budget to increase the number of campsites and Park Rangers..

We tend to choose to camp in the less developed campgrounds - which means there is no way to book a site as they are first come, first served only. Last season we went to a National Park and it was insanely busy. It sounds like it will be worse in 2017.

Fortunately there are provincial and local campgrounds too.
