fridge door thing ? Bigfoot

I have a 79Bigfoot 16ft with the bar type fridge that is installed below kitchen counter. The unit has a freezer and two rows of drink holders on the door.
... However on the bottom of the door there is a shelf with some black things,
see enclosed picture. We can't figure out what it is for ? ? ?
Perhaps someone has done a mod to make this space usable ?
I am perplexed with this mystery !

I believe those finger like things are there to keep items from shifting around but until you replace the missing front of the shelf you cant use it. The shelf above this has a front face on it and so should the bottom shelf.

This works best wiith larger items.
