I'm interested in buying a Scamp 13' and would like to install a Falks gas light to save battery power. Has anyone here had experience with using gas lights in a small unit like this? I'm not worried about carbon monoxide but using up all the oxygen and producing too much carbon dioxide could be a problem. link to Falks gas lights

Some RVs came with gas lights. I suspect the major problem will be keeping mantles from breaking -- It would get old having to put a new mantle on every trip...

I've transported Coleman lanterns in a pick-up over rough terrrain before and was surprised that the mantles were still in one piece. Also Falks makes RV mantles, which should be more rugged than the standard ones.

I'd be concerned about the heat. Except winter camping then it might be kinda nice! Click here to read the topic about Cold cathode fluorescent lights.

or this one Low voltage lighting,

That seems to be the way to go.

The mantle on mine does not break when traveling.

It does throw off a lot of heat and mine sputters, so I don't use it.

Danny,
There are heavier duty mantles which handle traveling. We had a propane gas light in an 8' cab-over camper which we used for many years. The mantles got broken mostly from being careless during lighting.
On a cold morning the heat output was enough to take the chill off. It saved fussing with the Zebco catalytic heater when we weren't going to be inside much.
My recollection was the light amount produced was similar to that of a 60 watt light bulb at home.
Oxygen consumption was sufficient that a window should be opened slightly.
We rather enjoyed using the light as an alternative energy source. It seemed kind of quaint, reminding us of stories about the "gas-light" era in our country's history.

That's the most practical solution, but........

I like old-fashioned technology too and I'll appreciate the extra heat in spring and fall when I'll be using it most.

You can also consider using an oil lamp with the smokeless oil. Some hardware stores carry the oil and lamps.

I have several kerosene lamps from back when the ranch didn't have electricity and I've bought glass shades for them and upgraded to a #3 burner, which puts out enough light to read by without hurting my eyes. But top quality 1K kerosene is $8.00/gallon! Packing all the parts for the road will take up a bit of space though.

This link for propane lights was posted on another group:

http://www.propaneproducts.com/gas-lights.html

Lots of waste heat, I believe. Says the light will burn for 11 hours on one pound of LP. A Coleman Black Cat will burn for 8 hours and produce 3,000 BTU/hour on one pound of LP.
